Episode 1.11 The Living Years

Overview:

After quitting the basketball team, Nathan takes advantage of his extra free time to see more of Haley. The couple spend an afternoon at his beach house, where the liquor flows. The Scotts see a therapist to try to fix their family problems, but the distance between Deb and Dan continues to grow. Meanwhile, Brooke grows jealous of Peyton’s deep bond with Lucas.

Recap:

“Truth is hard but hostility stays outside.” Yep, the Scott’s first counseling session can officially get started. Unfortunately, after barely two minutes, Dan can’t help but walk away, leaving a very angry and disappointed Deb. Meanwhile, someone else is definitely having more fun: Lucas, Brooke and a Jacuzzi.

The next day, Brooke catches up with Peyton, claiming she needs some help in order to connect more with Lucas. Peyton hands Brooke a CD by “Travis” but, as soon as Brooke gives it to Lucas, the kid totally understands it was Peyton’s idea. Later, Lucas reaches Peyton, pointing out that Brooke told him to listen to track 13, even though “there are only 12 songs.” Oops.

Tough time for Nathan, who wants to quit the team. The truth is, he’s feeling pretty confused at the moment. When he turns to Keith for advice, Big Uncle tells him that quitting something is not always a shame. Dan’s point of view is slightly different: “Keith, I don’t mind you playing Daddy to one of my offspring, but leave the good one alone.”

In the meantime, Peyton’s dad is back in Tree Hill but her big smile quickly disappears, as she finds out he is thinking about a new job: well-paid but also very, very far away. When she tells Lucas about her father’s job offer, he advises her to tell her father how she feels. Peyton does try to talk to him but in the end, she bottles it up, as usual. She can see that the job means a lot to her dad and so puts his desires above her own needs.

Haley’s ‘bad girl’ phase has officially begun. After skipping she and Nathan end up drunk at the beach house and Dan shows up. He is really mad, especially when Haley throws up on his pants. A moment that will live on in Tree Hill history.

Lucas confronts Haley about her new, rebellious behavior but she doesn’t want a lecture. “Talk to me when you get your tattoo removed,” she tells him. Later, Nathan tells Haley she doesn’t have to change because he likes the real Haley. She kind of agrees.
After Lucas’ pep talk, Peyton’s father decides to turn the new job down and get another job closer to home. Then he, Peyton and Lucas share a dinner. When Brooke see the three of them sitting happily together, she isn’t that thrilled. However, Lucas manages to convince her there’s nothing going on with Peyton.

And it turns out that, maybe, Dan is starting to come to his senses: for once, he does say to Nathan the right words. “Whatever you do, whatever you decide, you’re my son, and I am proud of you.” But Nathan has already made up his mind: he’s done with the team.
Symbolically, Nathan shoots Scott’s name tag into the trash, while a hurt Coach Whitey watches him leave.
