Overview:
After Peyton receives the devastating news that her father is lost at sea, she and Lucas take an overnight trip to Hilton Head to identify a body that has washed ashore. Overcome with emotion, Peyton kisses Lucas. Meanwhile, an unexpected visit from Dan’s parents leaves the Scott family in turmoil, as numerous family secrets are revealed at Dan’s birthday dinner.
Recap:
Ambush time at the Scott’s. It is Dan’s birthday and Royal and May Scott - Dan’s parents - show up unexpectedly, eager to celebrate his birthday dinner.
Immediately, Dan comes up with another brilliant idea of his: he begs Deb not to inform his parents about their marriage problems. Of course, Nathan’s team issues must be left out, as well. Deb can’t help but ask him: “Any other lies I should remember?”
Bad news. Peyton’s father was working on a boat when a bad storm got started and the man is now missing. Unfortunately, a body has been found and Peyton must drive to Hilton Head and try to identify if it’s her father. Brooke tells Peyton that Lucas should drive her there since “Lucas is good in crisis, not that there’s going to be one, but I would probably end up falling apart and you’d end up taking care of me which is not the point.”
Dan’s birthday party, better known as “The Dinner of the Lies”, has officially begun. When Nathan confesses he quit the team because of Dan’s pressure to perform, May reveals an explosive secret. When Dan was a college freshman, he injured his knee so badly that he had to quit basketball. Well, as it turns out, May and Dan told Royal it was a permanent injury even though it wasn’t the truth. Yep, Royal had been bullying Dan so much and Dan couldn’t live like that. That’s why May cannot believe Dan is doing the same to Nathan. Tension mounts and Royal erupts with anger over the long ago lie.
Elsewhere, Peyton and Lucas can’t cross a bridge because of the storm. They spend the night in a motel room and Peyton starts talking about her dad. To everyone’s utter shock (who did not see this coming, uh?) it seems like they’re emotionally bonding all the way.
Early the next morning, they find out that Peyton’s dad is fine. Overwhelmed with relief, they end up kissing. In the end, their intense kiss is interrupted when Peyton’s hair gets caught in the necklace that Brooke gave to Lucas. Wracked with guilt and shame, Peyton and Lucas stop, vowing never to tell Brooke what happened.
Breakfast time. May is positive that her husband will get over the whole basketball situation, but Royal doesn’t appear exactly eager to forgive. Later, Dan’s parents drive back home but something is different now. Nathan decides he can’t quit the team. As he explains to Haley: “I have to beat my Dad. It’s the only way I’m ever going to be free of him.”
Meanwhile, Peyton and Lucas are driving back to Tree Hill. Peyton assures Lucas what has just happened did not mean anything, but they both know this is just another lie.
