Episode 1.19 How Can You Be Sure?

Overview:

Lucas finds out that Brooke is pregnant and must make a decision regarding the pregnancy. Brooke gives Lucas the cold shoulder regarding the situation. Haley considers having sex with Nathan.

Recap:

Brooke’s pregnancy test is positive. Lucas assures Brooke he is not going to walk away but she clearly wants to cut him out. They start arguing and Lucas ends up saying he doesn’t even know if the baby is his because Brooke isn’t exactly a ‘pure soul’. Brooke cannot believe he is actually hinting she is a ‘without moral’ since he is the one who cheated on her. In that moment, the phone rings: Brooke tells Lucas the doctor assures she’s pregnant.

Nathan notices Haley’s tattoo and he’s a bit confused. So is Haley, who doesn’t know if she’s ready to have sex with him. He assures her that he doesn’t want to push her, and she seems relieved. Meanwhile, Dan finds out Lucas is a soon-to-be-father and advises him the best way is the abortion.

After Karen turns Keith’s proposal down, he decides to leave Tree Hill. Elsewhere, a jealous Nikki catches up with Peyton, pointing out that she is only a baby-sitter, and she won’t ever be Jenny’s mother. Peyton can’t help but remark: “All the eyeliner in the world won’t make you anything other than a psycho stalker.”

Lucas tells Karen what’s going on. She is really upset. “This is exactly what I didn’t want for you. You have so much left to do in life.” Anyway, as soon as Lucas tells Brooke that he will support whatever decision she makes, Brooke owns up to the truth: the doctor told her there wasn’t any baby at all. Since Lucas can’t believe she could lie to him like that, Brooke points out that she can’t believe he could cheat on her… with her best friend. Well, good point Davis.

While “Everybody hurts” by Dashboard Confessional is playing in the background, Keith enters the pawn shop, holding Karen’s ring. Brooke is on her bed crying; Dan is in his office. He opens a drawer and pulls out an envelope with a lot of old pictures and some press cuttings about Lucas. It turns out Dan does have a heart, after all. Nikki is outside Jake’s house and is watching Peyton, Jenny and Jake sitting on the couch; Peyton is holding Jenny and Jake is kind of sleeping next to her.

The music is still playing, while Karen catches up with Lucas. He tells her Brooke isn’t pregnant. Karen can’t help but hug her son in happy relief.
