Episode 2.22 The Tide That Left and Never Came Back

Overview:

In the first part of the two hour second season finale, things heat up between Lucas and Brooke after they head to New York for an overnight stay with Haley. Nathan and Deb conspire to desert Dan for good, leading to an explosive conclusion when he discovers their plan. Peyton is elated when she gets the band Jimmy Eat World to perform at TRIC in time for Jake’s release from jail. Meanwhile, Andy invites Karen to spend the summer in New Zealand.

Recap:

What’s the drama: Peyton gets Jimmy Eat World to play at the end-of-the-school-year celebration at TRIC, but she’s nervous because the last time she got a big band to play TRIC, her friend ran off with them and they haven’t seen her since.
Peyton has been calling Jake’s lawyers over and over and finally they got busy. They went over Nikki’s testimony line by line-and as it turns out, she lied to them under oath. The judge will lift the court order. He’ll be getting out of jail soon. Jake and Peyton can finally be together!
Lucas encourages Nathan to get with it and study for finals or else he won’t be able to play basketball next year–and then he invites Brooke on a road trip to see Haley. They started the school year together; they should end it together.
The gang is given an assignment for their English final: write about loss. They each have some good fodder for that one.
Andy has to head back to New Zealand to care for his mother. But there’s more to it. He’s not a citizen and Dan is trying to get him deported. When Karen storms into Dan’s office to tell him to back off and get out of her life, he grabs her and plants a big fat kiss on her. She’s so disgusted that she throws a chair through his window, telling him that the next time it’ll be his face.
Coach Whitey decides that it’s not too late for Nathan to get to High Flyers. He’s proud of Nathan and he wants to use his pull to get the kid in for the summer. Nathan wants to think about it. His mom is coming home soon and she might need him.
What’s up with Dan: Over dinner, Nathan tells his dad the good news–that he is considering High Flyers for the summer again. Rather than be happy for his kid, Dan gives him the guilt trip and lies to him — telling him that Deb’s addiction started when he moved out.
What’s up with Lucas: Brooke and Lucas kick off their road trip with a chat. She’s clearly jealous of Luke and Peyton’s friendship and figures that is what he’ll write on for their final. Instead he tells her, “I lost myself this year, along with some people I care about.”
When the twosome enter Haley’s backstage dressing room, the surprise is on them. She and Chris are awfully snuggly, enjoying a tickle fight and giggling to high heaven. Lucas tells her that they’re there to bring her the final English assignment.
What’s up with Whitey: Whitey comes to apologize to Dan — he wants the man to bury all his anger and do what’s best for his son — that is, let him go to High Flyers. Rather than be cool about it, Dan tells the old man that he was right, he, Dan, was a great player and he, Whitey, was a lousy coach and still is. Then he slams the door. That didn’t go so well.
What’s up with Mouth: Mouth thinks he flunked his math final because he was hanging with Erica instead and didn’t even bother to study. Since the normally studious Mouth is so involved with Erica and totally not into studying, Erica bribes him. For every sentence he writes of his English final, he’ll get a kiss. He wraps up the essay in no time at all.
What’s up with Jake: Nikki comes to say good-bye to Jake even before the hearing takes place. She wants him to know how it feels to not be involved in his daughter’s life and informs him that if he wants to hide Jenny, he should do better than Florida. Somehow, she found Jenny and she holds the kid up and tells her to say good-bye to Daddy. Aren’t there plenty of cops around? Isn’t she totally breaking the law? Somehow she walks out of the jail with Jenny, and out of Jake’s life.
What’s up with Nathan: He trains and practices at the court, but it’s clear that his basketball game ain’t what it used to be.
What’s up with Peyton: Her happiness is short-lived. When Jake gets out of jail, he comes straight to Peyton to tell her the bad news. He’s got to leave to find Jenny. But she wants to come with him — she loves him. He wants her to forget about him and move on. She’s too amazing to let this ruin her, and he loves her too much. He leaves.
What’s up with Haley: Once alone with Lucas, Haley swears to him that there is nothing going on with Chris. She guesses that Lucas has come to NYC because of Nathan. But Lucas admits that he misses his old friend. Haley stood by him when he left the River Court, and even though he may not understand it, he will stand by her now. While the two have a heart-to-heart, some fans come by and ask for Haley’s autograph.
What’s up with Karen: If Andy leaves the country, he tells Karen that he may not be able to get back. He urges Karen to come with him and she seems to genuinely want to go. She uses Deb and the businesses as excuses. But Andy tells her that he knows it’s Keith. She doesn’t deny it.
What’s up with Brooke: While Lucas plays helpful friend to Haley, Brooke shops like a woman possessed.
What’s up with Andy: Andy tells Dan that he knows all about his tax evasion scam. See, he owns the security company that installed his new system. He has his ledger and he’s going to ruin him. Dan tells him he’s bluffing. As Andy walks out, Dan chucks a trophy through the glass window. Did he just repair that after Karen threw the chair through it?
Later, Dan checks his safe while Andy’s real security system looks on. Dan is pleased to find his ledger still there and Andy is pleased to really have his security code.
How does it all wrap up: While in NYC, Lucas has it out with Chris. He tells him that he needs to keep his paws off of Haley. Chris swears that he is just there for her as a friend, the way he should be, and he is trying to help Haley chase her dreams; the rest is up to her. That night Lucas asks Haley why she isn’t wearing her wedding ring. She explains that she feels like she doesn’t deserve to. She also tells him that she isn’t going home. This is her life now. She asks Lucas to deliver the signed annulment papers to Nathan.
As Brooke and Lucas head home, she asks if he’s into Peyton and tells him about what she found. He doesn’t answer but she says she’s fine with it.
Andy comes to say goodbye to Karen. He’s leaving early. She’s surprised and tells him that she loves him. He gives her a package to give to Lucas. He loves her, too, but somehow it just doesn’t seem to be enough.
Nathan continues to practice and gets better and better. Lucas meets him at the court but doesn’t tell his brother where he’s been.
