Recap:
It’s the day before school. It starts with Lucas pulling out a brick from the wall on the roof where there used to be a mini-golf course for him and Haley in Season 1, where it turns out she and Haley used to put their predictions for the year every eve of the school year. Apparently Haley remembered too and she comes and they go over some of the old ones. But they decide that year to just see how it goes. At school the lockers were arranged alphabetically, so Luke Haley and Nathan have adjacent lockers. Brooke finds that Luke pimped her locker with Brooke+Lucas memorabilia. There’s a group of girls from whom Haley senses hostility from how they stare at her as she passes.Mouth is trying to podcast pre-season interviews with the ball players, but they all end up with him saying something cheezy about Erika leaving him so. Dan goes over to Whiteys and tells him on the agenda for the next school board meeting he’ll try to get him replaced.Ellie goes to see Lucas and tells him the reason she was buying marijuana is coz she has cancer and doesn’t want Peyton to know. So could he please tell her he made a mistake or something, so she gives Ellie another chance. Dan finds him at the Court and confronts him one-on-one about the dealership fire. But Skills and the gang interrupt and he says they’ll finish it some other time.Haley goes to talk to Whitey [he actually calls her Avril Lavigne when he sees her - that cracked me up
] and he gives her detention – they were in the boys’ locker room. Turns out the only other person that got detention was Nathan, and Whitey allows talking in detention that day, but Nathan doesn’t say anything to her. There’s a run-in between Haley and those girls, and she almost fights one of them which earns her three more detentions. Nathan is there too and this time he does talk to her.Nathan finds out from Dan that he’s trying to get Whitey replaced so he tells Karen to tell Luke. While Lucas tries to explain to Peyton maybe he dint really see Ellie, they enter her room and find her dad and Ellie going through Peyton’s stuff. She flies off the handle and tells them to all stay out of her life. Over at Brooke’s, she tells Haley she got a job at Suburban Filth, a clothing store. Also tells her not to worry about Nathan, that sometimes people play hard to get because they need to know the other person’s feelings are real, but it sounds like here she was mostly talking about herself. At the school board meeting Dan gives his speech about Whitey never having won a championship and that Tree Hill deserves better. Then Karen [who attended] says she’d like to say something, and praises Whitey for raising their boys into men, and they dont deserve anything they get what they earn, but that Whitey does deserve better – he’s already earned it. Whitey wins and stays on as coach.Lucas takes Peyton aside to the gym to tell her about Ellie. Dan finds them there and starts to strangle Luke thinking he tried to kill him. Then he learns that Lucas was there, but not to start the fire. It was Lucas that pulled him out of it, but now he wishes he hadn’t. When he’s gone, Peyton asks Luke if he’s ok and he says, "That’s my father. What do you think?"Lucas goes over to Brooke and Haley’s. Nathan comes too, to talk to her. He tells her he doesnt want an annulment, instead they should look into divorce, but according to the state they need to be separated for a year, so they should see what happens between now and then. She says she loves him and in a year things will be good for them again, he answers maybe, maybe not. Brooke tries to get Lucas to stay over, he says, just as soon as they’re exclusive. He even manages to side-step a strip tease. There’s a Lucas voiceover quoting Henry Wordsworth Longfellow. He and Haley actually write their predictions for the following year, and they meet up at the roof to store them in hiding in the wall. Meanwhile, Always Love by Nada Surf is playing in the background, and at the moment they are shown putting the predictions in their box, the song is at this line: "… It helps to write it down, even when you then cross it out…" Peyton’s dad had earlier told her if she couldnt talk to him maybe they should find her someone she could, like a shrink. But she opts to start a string of podcasts about her life on the internet, almost like the webcam thing she used to do in Season 1 but deeper and more sincere. Brooke writes another letter to Lucas and adds it to her collection. We see that so far there’s enough of them and she hasn’t posted even one. It ends with Nathan walking Haley to class when he found her dreading the animosity from Sue Garber and her friends.
