Episode 3.8 The Worst Day Since Yesterday

Overview:

As the town readies for the Ravens’ first basketball game, Lucas worries that his head and heart aren’t in it. Nathan accuses Lucas of being the Ravens’ weak link. Peyton and Haley mend fences to support Brooke in a time of need. When the mayoral race tightens, Dan resorts to a smear campaign.

Recap:

The town is celebrating the first Ravens game of the upcoming season. But Brooke has nothing to celebrate about. She confesses her major Chris Keller mistake to Haley and Peyton. Of course, Lucas isn’t answering her calls. So Brooke asks Peyton to talk to him for her. At least Brooke has her clothes line. That should at least cheer her up.
Surprisingly enough, Nathan is peeved at Chris Keller for sleeping with Brooke, but it has nothing to do with hurting Lucas. He can’t believe Keller just disregards people’s feelings so easily. Karen Roe does a little time campaigning on the radio. Someone named "Keith" calls in. It’s clearly Dan who asks how she can be in business with his wife…er…the wife of her opponent. Karen handles the idiot with style. She says that she forgives her business partner for her lack of taste and hopes that her business skills are better than her skills in picking a mate. Karen wins this round.
Meanwhile, Brooke is thrilled with her line of clothing until she asks her boss when she gets paid for her designs. Turns out she gets nothing but a ten percent discount. She signed a waiver when she began her job at the store and the entire line belongs to them. Things go from bad to worse — when Brooke misses school on game day she isn’t allowed to cheer in the game that night. But there’s nothing much to cheer about anyway.
Depressed, Lucas paints his front door black. Peyton comes by to tell him how miserable Brooke is, but he’s not having any of it. He’s angry on the outside but he’s just bummed on the inside. Lucas’ heart isn’t into the big game. He’s seriously moping over the Brooke thing. Karen reminds him not to let his heart get in the way of the one thing he loves the most. Lucas heads down to the river court to practice and gets a visit from Daddy Dan. Dan tells him to pass the ball to Nathan or he’ll tell Whitey all about his heart condition.
Peyton agrees to finally make up with Haley. First the two agree to help out their sad friend Brooke. But later they team up and tell Chris Keller where to go, and Peyton even gets to slap the guy. Later, finally Peyton admits to Haley that she’s tired of everyone leaving. And she’s been taking her anger out on her. But Peyton also admits that she’s happy that she’s actually come back, and welcomes her friend home…finally.
Dan hits the radio waves after Karen and tries to tout his "Family Values" platform, with his faithful wife by his side. It all starts at home after all, good parenting and loving relationships. Deb even has a written statement that she has trouble actually reading out loud.
Brooke mopes and consoles herself at home with cake.
Chris comes to visit Dan, where Dan declares himself Keller’s biggest fan. He’s not into his music, but he’s pleased with the way Keller ruined Nathan’s marriage. Chris Keller just wants the 500 bucks Nathan owes him. Dan pays up but isn’t pleased that he’s bankrolling Haley’s next album. Suddenly, Dan wants to talk real money with Chris Keller.
Before the game, Nathan tells Lucas he knows about what happened with Brooke, and he needs to get it together before the game or don’t bother playing at all. Then he gives him the same advice Lucas gave him when Haley went out on the road, "Forgive her. She loves you." Of course, it was dripping with sarcasm and followed up with, "Doesn’t help much, does it?"
In the locker room before the big game, Whitey tells the team that he will be retiring after the season and he wants to go out a winner. Just as Lucas would have been motivated, Nathan comes up to him and tells him that if he screws the team he’ll be screwing Whitey too.
She arrives late to the game, and Dan’s angry because the family guy can’t enter without his lovely wife. Deb informs Dan that Karen’s coming up in the polls because Tree Hill residents find him egotistical and arrogant. Imagine that.
Chris Keller shows up at the game to sing the national anthem. Unfortunately he sticks around for the game and it makes Lucas crazy, so his already weak game is even more terrible. The Ravens lose their home opener. After the disaster of a game, Dan comes back to the locker room to yell at the team and especially to Nathan, who he even knocks around and throws up against the lockers just for fun.
After the game, Brooke finally leaves the apartment and heads over to talk to Lucas. But he takes one look at her and asks Rachel for a ride home. On the ride home Rachel rubs in the fact that the Ravens looked terrible. She told him so and he needs to move on. When he tells her he’s not hooking up with her, she tells him that she’s not hooking up with him and he can think about that on his long walk home. And she kicks the guy out of the car. Hopefully he brought his walking shoes. As he makes his way home, he stops by the river and tosses his heart medication into the water.
Brooke tells Peyton that her talk didn’t exactly happen with Lucas. Peyton tells her friend that she has something that will cheer her up. They head over to Suburban Filth and take back all of Brooke’s clothing–leaving only some very naked mannequins behind.
Nathan and Haley walk home from the game together. And Mouth comes to visit Karen after the game. He greets her at the door with, "Hi, Mayor Roe" and shows her the video he took on his cell phone of Dan’s little outburst in the locker room. Not very mayoral behavior, not very mayoral at all.
