Episode 3.9 How a Resurrection Really Feels

Overview:

It is revealed that Lucas knows who tried to kill Dan and he confronts the guilty party. Brooke, Peyton and Haley find themselves behind bars. Peyton finds her guilty conscience on the surface. Chris Keller convinces Nathan to be his wingman at a high-stakes poker game. The residents of Tree Hill finally choose a mayor.

Recap:

Peyton is haunted by her evil subconscious. Evil Peyton wants her to buck up to the fact that she sent Ellie packing and she regrets it. The trio is arrested for stealing/wearing Brooke’s Suburban Filth stolen clothing. With no parental units in sight, Haley calls her husband. But he’s unavailable. So she calls Lucas. And when he goes in the drawer, he’ll discover more than just a little extra cash — he’ll see all the letters Brooke wrote him last summer. Typical Lucas comes and bails out the girls — well, he bails out two and makes Brooke wait an extra ten minutes before she gets out. He’s still a little bitter.
Chris Keller lost the $2,000 that Nathan paid him. Keller needs a ride, just 80 miles and he’ll get the money back for Haley’s demo. Keller is excited to take a road trip but Nathan is annoyed, especially when the musician admits that they are actually going to a poker tournament in order to win back the money. Chris Keller also admits that Dan paid him money to seduce Haley.
The incriminating commercial of Dan beating up Nathan airs and it looks like Karen has the mayoral race in the bag. But, back with his obsession, Dan is watching another video from a liquor store from a couple of hours before the fire and sees something new. He knows who tried to kill him. He claims he knows who sent him the booze that poisoned him before the fire, and it’s someone who Karen cares about. Then he tells Karen to concede the mayoral race or he’ll tell the town all about it.
Brooke is relieved to discover that Lucas didn’t find the letters she wrote to him. She goes to apologize to him, but he’s not having any of it. He’s bitter and angry, and he’s not afraid to let her know that.
Karen makes a call and asks the person on the other end of the line if they killed Dan, because she needs to know the truth. Later, as the election gets underway, Lucas tells Karen that Dan thinks the fire at the dealership was not an accident, and he encourages her to concede the race. Then she receives flowers from Andy — and she does not concede.
Nathan and Chris Keller end up on a riverboat at a very bizarre poker game that includes a dwarf Marty, some cops and a transvestite named Emanuel. Sadly, Chris is very bad at poker. He loses everything — including Nathan’s car. Then, somehow the boys come up with some winnings and the rest of the group accuse them of cheating. Keller punches the dwarf, and chaos ensues.
Haley tells Brooke they need to stop letting boys dictate their life. She convinces her friend to stop moping and get on with her life. Brooke gets motivated and takes some of Peyton’s drawings and creates herself a new fashion line, "Clothes over Bros."
After Karen’s moving speech, claiming her opponent will stoop to any level to win the mayoral race, Dan follows up with an equally moving speech, where he even chokes up a bit when he discusses the terrible video of himself. He admits that he’s a work in progress, and he’ll work hard for the town he loves so much. The town seems to fall for it.
When the poker game goes all wrong, Nathan and Chris Keller are forced to jump overboard. They end up wet, broke, and 80 miles from home. Luckily, Keller grabbed the car keys before they left the table. As they walk back from their fiasco, Keller even admits to Nathan that he kissed Haley at the Halloween party. But he did it all for him. He was honestly trying to get those two crazy kids back together. Still, Nathan doesn’t let that slide so easily. He gives Chris a few hard punches for that one.
Dan may think he knows who tried to kill him, but Lucas really does. He tells Deb that Dan only knows that the fire was not an accident. He doesn’t know who did it. And he doesn’t have proof. The note left behind is the last piece of evidence that will connect Deb with the crime. He gives it to her and tells her that now maybe she’ll be free. Meanwhile, Dan greets his public and begins (a bit prematurely) to celebrate winning the mayoral race. He calls his beautiful and supportive wife up on stage. But Deb’s nowhere to be found.
No matter how cute her new clothing line is, Brooke has a hole in her heart where Lucas used to be. She finally decides to give Lucas every letter she wrote last summer — all 82 of them. She confesses to him that she was afraid her heart would get broken again. He’s touched, and he actually forgives her. After all, he’s the guy for her. They are in love and tell each other so.
As it turns out, Chris Keller does have a heart. He sells his precious guitar to get Haley’s recordings from the studio. He believes in her and thinks the song is going to be a hit. He tells Nathan that he’s taking off, and he won’t be seeing him for awhile. Afterward, Nathan listens to Hale’s new song, calls her over and tells her he thinks it’s really good. Haley asks if he kissed her at the Halloween party and he says "yes." She knows better and thanks him for lying to her.
Peyton continues to be tormented by her evil self and the fact that she can’t find the bracelet that Ellie gave her. Her evil self encourages Peyton to find Ellie. She does some online searching and finally locates her. Will she go after her?
