Posted by Amy with No Comments
Overview:
Peyton spends more time getting to know her newfound brother, Derek. Meanwhile, Lucas gives up on his love for Brooke and Rachel tries to start a romance with Nathan.
Recap:
The episode begins with Peyton having breakfast with her half-brother, Derek, at the café. He snaps a photo of her sitting in the café before entering to meet her. He knows that she wouldn’t have dared to meet her alone so he asks who she brought as back up and Lucas, sitting at the table behind her bends over and introduces himself. After breakfast, Lucas walks down the street with Peyton, telling her that she and her brother seem to have a lot in common.
Nathan finds Haley in school and tells her he needs to be tutored because he thinks he’s failing marriage. He says he’s going to just focus on basketball instead of thinking about the accident, and claims all his problems disappear when he’s on the court.
Lucas meets Skills in the gym and they have a talk about basketball. Lucas hands him a jersey with his name, Taylor, on the back.
Dan returns to Keith’s grave where he’s once again haunted by the ghost of Keith from when he was a young boy. Dan tells Keith to stop haunting him. He makes the ghost of Keith a deal. Stop haunting him, and he’ll try to make things right with Karen, Lucas and the baby. But if he doesn’t, well, he ought to know what Dan’s capable of.
Brooke bitches to Haley about Peyton, saying it would be Peyton’s fault if they lose the game. She tells Haley that she can either be on her side or Peyton’s. Haley tells Brooke she’s being too harsh, but when Brooke tells Haley that Peyton kissed Lucas again and that they’ve been sneaking around, Haley is in disbelief. “Welcome to team Brooke,” says Brooke.
Lucas finds Brooke and tries to talk to her and tell her that there’s nothing going on with him and Peyton. She blows him off and he gets fed up with her and leaves.
Dan goes to the café and asks Karen if he can do anything to help and Karen says to stay away from Deb. He’s desperate to help and she tells him about Deb carrying a gun and being back on drugs. She says if you really want to be a better person, here’s your chance, take it. He finally agrees to stop pursuing Deb saying he’ll do it for her. Karen tells him to do it for himself instead.
Peyton finishes giving Derek a quick tour of Tree Hill, and Derek asks if she really wants to get to know him better because she’d kept her guard up all day. She says it’s hard for her to let people in. She’s not really sure if she wants to, but as he walks away, she invites him to the basketball game that night as well as the after-party.
At the basketball game, before the game starts, Dan presents an award, as the Mayor, to his son for his bravery in the accident. Nathan reluctantly goes up to receive the award, and as he does, Rachel runs up and jumps up to plant a kiss on him, in front of the entire gym. This sparks off fury in Haley, who tells Rachel to back off.
Nathan earns two free throws in the match and manages to score the first with ease. But when it comes to the second one, the memories of the accident suddenly haunt him, causing him to miss it. He doesn’t manage to score a single goal for the rest of the two quarters of the match.
It comes to the half time break and Mouth goes up to Rachel. He reminds her how much he likes her, saying “you know how I feel about you…” But instead she tells him what a good friend he is, and how luck she is to have him. Mouth feels rejected at the word friend, and trying to make him feel better she says, “Great friend?” He dejectedly turns to go and she tells him apologetically that she’s a mess.
In the boy’s locker room, Skills stops Nathan on the way out, asking him to persuade the coach to let him play instead of sitting on the bench. He tells Nathan to tell the coach something, which Nathan promptly repeats to the space behind Skills, where the coach had been standing all along.
Eventually the Ravens win, celebrating their victory at Rachel’s house. Lucas goes up to Brooke with a peace offering which she rejects. Brooke sees Peyton walk into the house with Derek, and goes up to Peyton. She turns to Derek to ask if he was with Peyton before grabbing him and kissing him. Peyton goes off to find Brooke and tells her Derek was actually her brother. Brooke seems indifferent and retorts that her mum must’ve slept around even more than her.
Skills enters the room with the Scott brothers, thanking them for getting him on the team. He and Lucas continue a discussion before Skills turns to leave. As he walks away, a cheerleader comes up to him with major news. Lucas turns around to listen to the cheerleader, who promptly announces to Skills that Brooke and Lucas have broken up.
Peyton finds Mouth to introduce her brother, and finds him by the beer keg, drunk as a skunk. Peyton introduces him as her “great friend Mouth”, before leaving to use the bathroom. The comment sets Mouth off and he begins to blabber about being everyone’s friend. Derek doesn’t know what to do and just listens to him. Mouth finally walks off.
Nathan goes outside and finds Rachel, who says she was told to stay away from him. He asks her about the accident, whether she remembered seeing anything in the water. Rachel moves up close to him and Haley sees it happen.
Haley runs into Lucas talking to another girl and comments, “are you gonna kiss her too?” which starts him off. He clears things up with Haley saying that Peyton was bleeding and that she was the one who kissed him. Plus, did she really wanna go there, having herself kissed Chris Keller.
He walks outside and finds Brooke talking to a bunch of guys. He confronts her about never having fought for him although he fought for her. She said she wasn’t going to fight for him, so he leaves her saying that he was wrong, and that he wasn’t the guy for her.
Lucas finds Mouth drunk sitting on the bench out by the pool, where he begins blabbering again. Lucas leaves him be and goes inside where he finds Haley on the stairs who apologises to him. They make a pact to stay friends forever.
Peyton finds Nathan sitting by himself and goes over to him. They have a conversation about him seeing Keith and about how she used to feel the same when her mum died. They leave together and Rachel watches them. A couple of guys stop Nathan, reminding him to take his award, which he then throws in the bin.
Haley comes outside and Rachel says that if she’s looking for Nathan, he’s in her bed. Rachel calls her a fat chick with a little head.
Lucas sits on the bench again with Mouth, who says he wished none of them had ever left the River Court. Lucas offers him a ride home which he declines saying he’ll stay there for a while. He then proceeds to lie down on the bench.
Karen goes to see Dan to ask him about whether he thought Lucas would be okay not being able to play basketball. He says he’s not the right person to ask. She thanks him for the crib and leaves.
Brooke is clearing up the rubbish with Rachel at the poolside. She tells Rachel to back off from Nathan which Rachel says no to. Brooke tells her it is her business to make sure Nathan and Haley’s marriage works but Rachel retorts confidently saying that Brooke is gonna stay out of it… Because she’s pregnant. Brooke is shocked and Rachel continues, talking about the maternity clothes Brooke’s been making, about Brooke not having drunk alcohol and about the Planned Parenthood pamphlets she found in the drawer. She stomps off with Brooke going after her.
All this while, by the pool, Mouth, who had passed out drunk on the bench overhears the conversation.
Back at Peyton’s house, Derek admires the drawings on her wall, and so happens to really like the one her Ellie drew. She lets him have it and he asks if they could catch up the next day which she agrees to.
Lucas finds Skills at the River Court and tells him what Mouth said about never having left the River Court, wondering how much differently things would have turned out. Skills turns out with a couple of words of advice which are pretty enlightening.
Back at Dan’s house, he sees Keith’s ghost again. The ghost says there’s only one way to get rid of him and he knows what it is. Dan stares at the gun lying on the table.
Nathan returns home and Haley confronts him about constantly going to the bridge. She feels out of place because he’s not letting her in. He finally tells him about seeing Keith save him under the water. They reconcile and she understands him. He pulls out the cracker jack bracelet that had been lost in the water, and puts in on her wrist once again.
The episode ends with Peyton receiving an email containing a picture of herself that Derek had taken, which she puts up on her wall. There’s a scene of Brooke crying in bed, followed by one of Nathan and Haley in bed. As Lucas’ voice over comments about how you could be a big part of someone else’s life and not even know, they show a scene of Derek in his own room, with almost hundreds of pictures of Peyton all over his wall.
Episode ends.
