Worcester native and St. John’s High graduate Tom Werme will appear in a featured role in the upcoming season finale of the CW network’s “One Tree Hill.” Werme plays new sports anchor Steve Gold in the episode, which is scheduled to air Monday.

This is Werme’s second acting gig in the last year, as he was a featured extra in the George Clooney football flick, “Leatherheads.” For the “One Tree Hill” job, Werme auditioned for and shot the episode within a one-week period earlier this month in Wilmington, N.C.

“They were looking for a real sports announcer for the role, even though the character had dialogue away from the news desk and scenes with the other actors,” Werme said. “I went in, did well in the audition, got the job and shot the show. It was great.”

Werme started his broadcasting career at Channel 3 in Worcester and spent time with NECN in Boston, WLNE in Providence and WWLP in Springfield before settling into the sports director position for the Fox affiliate in Harrisburg, Pa. After six years there, Werme accepted a TV host job for the NBA’s Charlotte Bobcats.

Moving to play-by-play after two years, Werme now announces college and amateur sporting events for Fox Sportsnet South and the Big Ten Network. He has also worked for ESPN and continues to do sports anchor work for the NBC affiliate in Charlotte.

Werme is a 1987 graduate of Saint John’s and was born and raised in the Burncoat Street area of Worcester. He graduated from Syracuse University in 1991 and currently resides in Charlotte with his wife, Kirsten, an Assumption College graduate originally from Lunenburg, and their two children, Cameron (7) and Olivia (4).
