Tyler Hilton started writing songs when he was 14 years old. He released his first album when he was just 19.

Hilton’s professional career hasn’t been just about music. Hilton portrayed a young Elvis Presley in the Johnny Cash biopic, “Walk The Line.” He also played Chris Keller on TV’s “One Tree Hill.” Now 24 years old, the singer-songwriter and actor is working on his second album.

Hilton will perform 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Crystal Lake Gala.

What question are you asked the most in interviews?

Probably, if I’m related to Paris Hilton, which I’m not. You know, I don’t blame them.

Your Web site seems to be very personable. You have a lot of videos up there and you even had a contest where you called people on Valentine’s Day. Do you feel that’s the best way to connect with your fans?

I think you just have to do what you what you like. I dig making phone calls and doing videos. Maybe I’m an attention w—-, I don’t know. I’m not the guy that takes long guitar solos … I do videos and call people.

You’ve had a few acting roles where you played a musician. Do you feel you were typecast, or is this how you choose your parts?

Before I got into acting, I made up my mind that if I was going to act, I only wanted to do off-, off-Broadway s—. I didn’t want to be that actor/musician guy. Then “Walk The Line” came along. I got a chance to play my idol, Elvis Presley … Then “One Tree Hill” came along. All the scripts I get are singer/songwriter (roles). I’ve been halfway through some scripts and said “man, this is really good.” Then it will say “Johnny pulls out a guitar.”

How did you prepare to play Elvis?

I knew a lot about Elvis already. There’s this great book about Elvis. I think it’s called “Last Train to Memphis.” … The easy thing to do was play him Vegas-y. I wanted to play him in his late teens. The guy in the movie didn’t know he was the King of Rock ’n’ Roll. Of course, I completely over-thought the part. I definitely had to practice the dance moves.

IMDB (the Internet Movie Database) says Joaquin Phoenix took you out for your 21st birthday. Is that true?

Not true. I don’t know why that’s on there. We did go out several times. I was like 19 then. Maybe we did go out for my birthday. I don’t know.

Must have been a good birthday.

I don’t think anybody should remember their 21st birthday.

Are you finished appearing on “One Tree Hill”?

I can’t say “definitely, for sure.” I did really dig it. This record’s taking up so much of my time.

How much of your success do you attribute to that show?

It brought in a younger crowd. With the first record, the crowd was much older. I was touring with acts like The Neville Brothers. When I did “One Tree Hill,” it brought in a younger crowd. There’s an element of visibility some musicians don’t get.

What kind of music are you putting on your new album?

I’m trying to hone in on the phases I’ve been in the last few years. I think a lot happens between 18 and 24. I made the last [record] when I was 18 … I want it to be cohesive. When you’re making a record a record, its like the ultimate mix tape. Not for your girlfriend, but you … I realize this album is introducing me to people who don’t know who I am. It’s picking the songs that go on the record. That’s the hard part.

How do you narrow it down?

I started with 70 tunes I really liked. I brought my band to Nashville … We narrowed it down to 50 and then down to 30 … My record label is a good sounding board. It’s been an everyday conversation for two years.

Is it because you’re a perfectionist?

I wouldn’t say “perfectionist” is the word, but what I am is close to that. I don’t know. When you’re asked interview questions like this, it makes you think about yourself. Maybe it’s narcissism or something like that.

i love tyler! and i wish chris would come back and make an appearance in tree hill. it would be fun to see where he’s at five years later. plus, he would add comic relief to all the drama we’re expecting this season.
