Hilarie Burton Interview – School Shooting

In a recent interview Hilarie Burton tells how the cast reacted to the news that they were going to have to film the school shooting:

Arguably the most-memorable episode of One Tree Hill almost didn’t happen. The season three story of outcast teen “Jimmy Edwards” holding students hostage at gunpoint before committing suicide was met with strong resistance from the cast, according to a new interview with Hilarie Burton (Peyton). “None of the actors were into it, none of us wanted to do it,” she tells Fanvasion. “We got the script and were very upset about it. We were like, ‘This hasn’t happened in so long. Why would we bring this up? We don’t want to encourage or give attention to that kind of behavior.’” The Columbine tragedy had occurred seven years earlier, when Hilarie was still in high school. “Then literally while we’re having this conversation with our creator and our bosses, two (shooting) incidents happened. It was heartbreaking to know that stuff was still going on, it just wasn’t receiving media attention that it used to.” A year after the One Tree Hill episode aired, Hilarie said, her brother’s homecoming date was shot in the hand trying to keep a classroom door closed during the Virginia Tech massacre, so the subject hits very close to home. The popular actress made her comments during an interview about her next film project, The Sacrifice, based on the inspirational novel by Robert Whitlow, which includes a school shooting.

    another movie, the sacrifice?

that’s the same thing that i thought when i saw the episode… it will encourage those outcast students to do something like that because they have an excuse to kill others..

I have never seen her in anything but one tree hill and dawsons creek. I know she has a couple of movies, like solstice, the list, and something like the secret life of bees, I don’t really know. I even tried to get the movie solstice but I couldn’t find anywhere local that had it which was a bummer. :(

That’s interesting, I never knew that the cast had a problem with that episode. I’m glad they eventually realized it’s importance and just how significant that episode was to many people.

  4. Heather Says:

I just can’t imagine what the storyline would be if the shooting hadn’t happened. Everyone’s storyline was effected by the shooting…OTH would just be a completely different show.

Even though the subject matter was tragic, episodes like that bring to light the danger of making kids feel like outcasts. As we all recall, high school can be a cruel place for those who aren’t “A-listers,” but even teenagers are old enough to realize that every person has feelings, and it’s hard enough to maneuvre thru school without people avoiding you or making fun of you. Teachers need to recognize warning signals, as well, and help make everyone feel welcome socially in their classrooms. More often than not, loneliness, despair and a feeling of hopelessness leads these “wayward” students into dangerous thought patterns.

Kids, try to be inclusive of everyone in some way. Believe me, 10 or 15 years down the road at your HS reunions, status and popularity don’t mean squat. You’ll find that some of the kids you treated the worst many times turn out to be more successful than you.

I go to a high school pretty much on the Virginia Tech campus. My brother goes there and my mom works there. So that day was really terrifying. And to hear how this affected so many people like Hilarie and her brother, it really shows how small the world is that we live in. And the shooting episode on OTH, though tragic, was an eye-opening episode that everyone needs to be aware of. I would have never thought that there would be shootings at Virginia Tech, but it happened.

  9. kat2392 Says:

wow i didnt even know they had a problem with it
in my opinion the episode showed me how tragic it is and some of the warning signs. I think it may help prevent more than making kids see how to do it and stuff. I think we all need to be aware of it and the episode really did help shed light on the situation

That episode was a mini movie in itself. I think that it’s something that every high school student should see as long as they recieve the right message. I’m in high school and if i become a teacher i think that i would show that to my freshmen class on the first day of high school. It was so powerful and it really did make you think about including everyone and not just sticking to your group of friends. I like to think that i became a better classmate for seeing the episode.

  11. Casey Says:

and for anyone that might be wondering that girl that got shot at V-tech, her name was Katelyn Carney

  12. Nicole Says:

I thought this episode was really sad, It made me cry..
Its a good thing to show students to get a message out that stuff like this is happening…

  13. kat2392 Says:

  16. charlene aka (Cha Cha) Says:

I know everyone has their opinions about this episode it was an emotional episode, its just that focusing on these things lets people know it happens, its sad its hurts,I know but it happens,it can be a cruel world,I personaly hate watching the news, its depressing, this episode was so sad I cryed through the whole thing,it was very moving.

  17. Stephanie Says:

Wow. I never knew that the cast had a problem with this episodes script. You would think they would have seen the extreme significance of airing this episode. I was in 7th grade when Colombine happened and I was living in Littleton, Co. at the time of the shooting. To think that if that day had only been 2 years later, I would be dead. That makes me realize that you have to think about the present. This minute. Treat people nicely. Be polite to all and never leave out people who are different than you. Because you never know if that person that you leave out is another Dylan Kleibold or Eric Harris…or Jimmy Edwards…

  18. Kathii Says:

I was really shocked of that episode because jimmy was very quite and i think they acted brilliantly coz it must of been. Even though i watched it i think bout people doing this alot and it makes me veri sad. I wz shot once it has changed me for better but worse as well i can get scared 2 go out.

  20. tutor girl Says:

This is so sad and really makes me cry.
It teaches us to make sure to include everyone, we have no idea how damaging the effects are until someone takes a stand.
But also we have to reinforce that being left out cannot be given as an excuse for a school shooting.
There will always be popular and unpopular, no matter what. Instead of trying to change something that will never change, we should focus on ensuring that people make it throught the hard times and can survive and make it through, and years later show that popularity in high school means nothing.
RIP to everyone lost in school shootings,
And to those feeling left out, be strong and make it through.
