Hollywood The Write Way: Joe Manganiello Talks About One Tree Hill
Almost exactly one month ago I had the opportunity to talk to an actor who I have watched on the small screen every week on The CW for some time now. Joe Manganiello, who plays Owen on One Tree Hill took time out to talk to Hollywood the Write Way about One Tree Hill, Spider Man 4, and more. The most interesting bit I found was that Joe and Sophia Bush did shoot scenes where their characters stayed together! One can only hope those scenes end up on the DVD. There is so much more he talked about and it is all below.
Tell me about your audition process for One Tree Hill?
The first audition I went into, there were 20 – 30 other actors. When I went in for the callback, it was down to myself and another actor. I think he was from Scotland. We each read twice and then I found out that I got the part shortly after that. Within a week later, I had to be in North Carolina shooting.
What was it like shooting the episode, We Three (My Echo, My Shadow and Me)?
That was a blast. I think originally Robbie Jones was going to play the cop but I think something happened where they thought it would be better suited for my character, so they threw me in. That was fun seeing everyone in the period costumes. I spent most of my filming for that episode tied to a chair, having water splashed in my face with blood all over me, being beat up by Dan.
Do you have a favorite episode?
One of my favorite episodes is from Season 5 when Brooke and Owen go to NY and find Rachel who overdosed. I love that episode. It seemed like a lot of the fans really loved that episode too. I think that was the episode that really put my character over the top. That was when the fans really started responding. I remember that the night that episode aired I got about 300 Myspace messages. In Season 6, I believe it was episode 9 that was the final slam ball episode, I enjoyed. We played slam ball and then I wound up naked in the back of Brooke’s car. We actually filmed the scene that never got aired of Brooke and I deciding to stay together and be a couple. I was over my issue with kids and I was going to be okay with Sam, and we were going to form a nice family unit. We shot those scenes and they were damaged by a machine. We were going to re-shoot but by the time we were going to re-shoot, the writers re-wrote the scenes to have us break up. So my other favorite episode would be the that one – with the original scenes.

I just wonder why they didn’t reshoot the scenes??? Don’t get me wrong, Brooke and Julian are my favorite couple right now, it’s just odd they changed an entire plot point.

Then I’m glad the machine damaged the scenes !
Maybe they changed the plot because they knew they would bring a new character… Julian

I totally agree. I mean I like Joe, but he wasn’t right for Brooke.

Maybe the film really did get damaged and they probably did already know that they’d be bringing in a new character but i just dont understand why they had to ruin Browen the way they did. I mean, couldnt they have just ended it with the car scene and not have had to dig deeper and bring the whole “Owen and Millie” thing into the storyline too? I get that they wanted to make Julian an amazing guy in Brooke’s eyes but theres a million ways to do that..but whatever, its not my orchestra to conduct.

Yeah, I am really happy the machine damaged the scenes too! I love Joe, just not Owen, there wasn’t enough chemistry between Brooke and Owen, in my opinion. It makes me think that Brulian was just a last minute decision, which is kinda awesome. I always enjoy when couples are endgame and that wasn’t the plan in the beginning. That wasn’t a dig again Leyton either, I like Leyton. Pacey/Joey and Buffy/Spike were in my mind when I said that. I would love to hear what happened in a commentary from Mark or something.

wow that would have meant no brulian. dang man. wow how random is it that a machine damaged those scenes? dang

This proves to me they changed around Julian’s whole character just to make him appealing to Brooke. Honestly if you watch the end 8th episode where Julian is first introduced he doesn’t seem like he’s going to be a nice guy, in fact he seems like he’ll be a scumbag but instead an episode later we find out he’s a nice guy. Something about that defintely did not transition well, so i’m lead to believe Julian was supposed to be alot more mischievious and probably meddle alot more in LP relationship.
However, i think since it was known by this point that Chad was not going to be coming back for another season, and the network had already brought up the prospects of having another one, Mark decided to change the whole storyline around. So, instead of having Julian be this big jerk who came to mess with LP he turned out to this nice guy who just wanted Peyton back, but then suddenly moved on to Brooke. I think they decided since Chad was not going to be around next season; to make Peyton pregnant in order to kinda wrap up the LP storyline, and also to leave a piece of Lucas behind if they decided to kill him like orginally planned.
However, somewhere in that big mess they decided it would be better to keep Lucas alive since he is the protagonist of the series, and killing him would probably damage Peyton’s character beyond repair so thats where the whole Hilarie stuff comes in. They didn’t want Peyton’s character to be diminshed, since she would more than likely be involved in some kind of triangle with Julian and Brooke ten seconds after Lucas’s death, which is implied in a few episodes this season. So, more than likely, they talked to Hilarie about it and she ultimately decided it would probably be better for her character to leave.

That’s a pretty logical theory actually. The only thing is, why not just do that with Owen? I’m pretty sure Joe loves Browen and really would like to have come back more regularly, and from what we have heard from Mark, Austin was more difficult to hire. I personally think Austin is a better actor and much more charming, so maybe they saw him on film, and saw potential. Who knows. It’s interesting none the less.

I don’t think they had anything else to do with Austin. I mean, everyone knew he was brought in to mess with LP but when that didn’t happen he was practically useless, so they had to give him something to do, since he was contracted for ten episodes.
Honestly, i think this big change is probably why things were so boring this season because they didn’t have the tiem to shake things up and make them perfect again. So, they just decided to keep everything content with alittle drama thrown in here and there. I do believe LP were meant to deal with Julian the second half of the season, but because of the Chad debacle things had to change quick.

I’m glad that Julian is with Brooke i like Joe but i don’t think that Browen is a great couple contrary to Brulian i love them better and Julian and his grin !!!!!! i can’t resist lol
