i think these numbers are pretty respectable, considering the world series and the fact that this was a filler episode. i love oth but i have to admit that it wasnt that good but im glad the numbers held and wow look at the drop of GG.

Final ratings:
One Tree Hill
- 2.321 million viewers
- 1.6/2 HH
- 1.1/3 A18-49
- 1.5/4 A18-34 Eeker
- 2.3/6 W18-34
Gossip Girl
- 1.981 million viewers
- 1.4/2 HH
- 1.0/2 A18-49
- 1.4/4 A18-34
- 2.3/6 W18-34
I mean, the ratings for One Tree Hill are nothing to get that excited about, but One Tree Hill beat Gossip Girl in A18-34 and tied it in W18-34. Dawn must be pissed!

^ LMFAO. I was thinking the same thing. ROFL

with the world series going on last night, not to bad.
but yeah, i agree about dawn. her gg isnt doing nothing in the ratings. i call it karma, she wanted to switch the times because oth didnt need the lead-in, but the show is still doing better than gg.
i have a feeling that if we get an 8th season the shows will switch time slots again.

Off topic but I found where Tim went!

Lol, plussizzegrl I’ve known that for a while now. I’m super proud of the actor that plays Tim, because he is a good actor. He just was never really given solid material to work with on One Tree Hill. His character was just really one dimensional. Now he’s playing a character with actual problems and substance.

well tim was never supposed to be a soild character. im sure the actor knew that when he got the role

Last week, the show had 2.7 million viewers and that was still during playoffs. I was really surprised by how high the rating was (a season high maybe?) and figured we’d see more of that this week in a ripple effect of sorts. I thought whoever extra tuned in last week was blown away, as we all were, by how amazing the episode was and would’ve stuck around for this week. No such luck. I mean, the rating isn’t bad and is pretty standard for OTH these days. But I was disappointed given the 2.7 the week before. I didn’t expect it to drop back down so soon.

^^^big big difference between playoffs and the actual world series. with the play off we were watching to see what teams would make it to the worldseries. the worldseries is the biggest baseball game off the entire year. esp. with it being the yankees first time in like 6 years in their new home, vs the phillies who could walk away with back to back years.

I’m well aware of the draw of the World Series, as I am a die-hard Yankees fan. But when you add the viewership of the separate playoff games (AL and NL) it comes pretty close to the size the World Series is getting. So in terms of viewers watching baseball last week and now, it’s about the same. Therefore, the circumstances last week and this week aren’t that much different and yet OTH still dropped. So, in short, I’d be careful how much we attribute to the World Series.

I was pleasantly surprised, these are actually higher than I thought they’d be. Ratings take into consideration the duration that viewers watch a show, right? This was definitely a drama-light filler episode where you could more or less just watch bits and pieces of it without missing much of the storyline. I’m sure lots of people got bored with it and didn’t watch the whole thing, so I think even reaching the ratings of a normal, drama-filled episode is an accomplishment, and probably the result of last week’s bump.

when oth had their high ratings last week, baseball wasnt on. so they didnt go up against them. the week before that was the playoffs and they had about 4.8, and last night was about 5.3

Alex, yes, some ratings do take into account when people tuned in (i.e. 8-830, 830-9). So sometimes you are able to see if people tuned out or not. Just want to make sure I understand you correctly: you are saying you are pleased with the ratings because you thought people would tune out considering it was such a light, drama-free episode?
November 4th, 2009 at 2:20 am
If baseball wasn’t even on, then that’s a different story.
Last night, actually, the World Series had 17 million total viewers. I like going by that rather than the rating shares and demographic numbers. (Though I know The CW really likes going by the demos.) And OTH had 2.3 million total viewers, which is in the realm of what they’ve been doing this season. So I don’t see how baseball really affected them. They did what is becoming the norm this season. But if you want to attribute baseball to the drop from 2.7 last week, sure. I can accept that.

well truthfully i thought last nights ratings would be lower, because last nights episode wasnt that good. i tuned it out in the background and i havent done that at all this season. so they suprised me

I didn’t like the episode either, though I’ve read that a lot of people did. So that combined with last week’s high, I thought it’d be a bit higher than 2.3. Oh well!
November 4th, 2009 at 2:41 am
Shari, yeah, that’s basically what I meant. I’d prefer it if OTH had 17 million viewers, but I thought 2.3 was respectable given the content and the fact that it’s on the CW. I’m assuming the reason 707 pulled in so many viewers is because it was really good drama. obviously, those extra peoples wouldnt’ve found that this week. I personally liked the breather, but it didn’t keep me glued to the screen and I’d totally understand casual viewers changing the channel. Next week looks really good, so hopefully the ratings can build on this. If they don’t, THEN I’ll be worried, but I wasn’t expecting much from this episode.
November 4th, 2009 at 2:48 am
Oh, I know 2.3 is respectable given those things. As I said, this is the norm for them these days. I was just disappointed in contrast to 707.
It’s strange because people didn’t know in advance that episode was going to be so good. I imagine they tuned in naturally, not because people called each other up and said “turn this on immediately, this ep is great,” you know? Why they tuned in, then, I don’t know. But, given all the raves for the ep, I thought all those extra viewers would’ve loved it, too, and return this week–not all of them, of course, but way closer to 2.7 than 2.3 is. Then I assumed it would slowly dwindle down further in the coming weeks. Make sense?

yea, I totally understand where you’re coming from, but that’s why I was wondering if the overall ratings take a hit if lots of people tune in in the first half hour, and then change the channel. I’d imagine the number of diehard viewers stay the same from week to week, what changes is the number of casual viewers, who probably don’t take the time to share their reactions online. 707 drew in a lot of extra people for a reason, and 707 and 708 were so different in terms of tone and plot, I wouldn’t blame casual viewers who liked 707 for losing interest.
Personally, I didn’t think this episode got that great a response, but that’s just me. I didn’t see the same level of enthusiasm, and it felt like the discussion boards on other sites died down pretty quickly. I’m guessing you had a different experience though, so I completely understand your surprise.
November 4th, 2009 at 3:08 am
Sorry for the dp, kind of didn’t read all of your last post. I’m normally a channel flipper, I make an exception for OTH. I’d imagine a lot of casual viewers just flip over to OTH from time to time to see whats going on. if they don’t like it, they change to something else. I’m guessing 707 just had something that made them stick, and watch the rest of the episode, hence higher ratings.
I would hope that watching a show for 5 minutes doesn’t count the same as watching for the full hour in the ratings, because, wow, then they’d be really inaccurate.

I get what you’re saying as well. And I am seeing, too, that the convos here and elsewhere died down really fast this week. It seems, to me, that people (not everyone) said they loved the ep and it was hilarious. But they obviously aren’t still talking about it and I attribute that to the fact that, when it comes down to it, there’s not that much to talk about. The ep might’ve been fun and refreshing after all the drama but the drama is what makes most of our conversations. It’s possible people did watch the whole ep but just aren’t talking about it.Cause, again, the 2.3 is pretty standard now. It was the 2.7 that wasn’t. And I don’t think this episode is representative of OTH and its quality level, so I’m sad this followed such an amazing episode and possibly lost some of those casual viewers you mentioned or, possibly, new ones.
The ratings system is actually quite complicated and flawed. I don’t think it counts if you watch for 5 mins but the ratings as a whole are based on a sample size, not the whole population. There are so many rules and calculations that I don’t even understand at all. I try not to analyze where the number comes from too much. I just take the total viewers and compare it week to week. I think that, and the DVR numbers, are enough. Though demos do matter, too, in terms of getting advertisers and all that jazz.

Those are good enough numbers for OTH. Hope we get a season 8.
