Zap2it: ‘One Tree Hill’ creator Mark Schwahn: Will Season 8 be its last?

Posted by Amy with 28 Comments

Last week, “One Tree Hill” was picked up by The CW for an 8th year, just two days before the network’s official fall schedule was presented to advertisers in New York.

The 11th hour renewal was a big victory for the show’s cast, crew and its creator, Mark Schwahn, who tells Korbi TV that this next year is really a gift to the loyal fans who have stuck with “OTH” for seven years and deserve to see its storylines tied up properly.

So, will this 8th go-round be the series’ last?

Schwahn weighs in …

Do you see Season 8 as “One Tree Hill”‘s swan song?

MS: It’s such a great question because nobody’s talking like that! I never say never with this show. You know, our back’s been against the wall every year. And going into this [upcoming] season, at the Upfronts, [the network] announced [that it would be] the final season of “Smallville.” They didn’t do that with us.

This is what I dislike about Schwahn: he just won’t stop. And talk about being greedy.. at the end of season 8 they’ll be at 175 episodes. That’s close to 200, yes, but you’ll need another 2 seasons just to get there. And season 8 is already pushing it. Please, please, please stop. I love OTH and I’m so happy for an 8th season but it’s already becoming overkill. Tack on another season and it will be overkill.

he comes off as a joker a lot. i think this will be it for the show. because this sentence “The 11th hour renewal was a big victory for the show’s cast, crew and its creator, Mark Schwahn, who tells Korbi TV that this next year is really a gift to the loyal fans who have stuck with “OTH” for seven years and deserve to see its storylines tied up properly”

that to me says this is it. because i dont see the cw going on past this or james, joy, and sophia.

“…that this next year is really a gift to the loyal fans who have stuck with “OTH” for seven years and deserve to see its storylines tied up properly.” —> Sounds like this might be the last season & we’ll be seeing a series finale soon. I guess we’ll see. Only time will tell.

I’m confident that we’ll get a full season. After episode 13, The CW will give us a full season. I like our chances of getting 23 episodes this season 8 and reaching 175 episodes. That would be awesome!

Mark’s just keeping an open mind and being open to possibilities and options. Like he said: never say never. And he also said that he doesn’t want to overstay his welcome. So no worries. Besides, he did say that he has a plan in case it’s just 13 episodes. He has a plan if we get a full season, and he has a plan in case we get a season 9 or more. Mark knows what he’s doing. Trust in his writing and capabilities.

    That guy is just insane!

i think this will be the last season. because he talks about if they dont get a full season or s9 then at least the storylines will come to an ending for the fans, not exact words but something along those lines.

  6. Comment by Shelly in May 27, 2010 @ 3:33 am

A 9th season? Please no! Let the show end and close properly, and end it right. The show has become a disaster writing wise, and should have ended a while ago. Do not try and make this 7th Heaven, Mark.

OMG He’s unbelievable and so greedy.

Fans wanted s8 so they can wrap core 3 storylines and from this interview I can already see we’re gonna get the same BS like in s7, stupid triangles and if they tell him show is cancelled,he won’t be able to wrap everything properly in one episode.

It’s so annoying and I can’t believe he wants to do the same thing all over again. I’m not looking forward to next season after this interview.

    guys,
a little respect for the guy who created the show we just spent months campaigning for

  9. Comment by mary in May 27, 2010 @ 6:32 am

Why should we respect him when he obviously doesn’t respect us? Wanting s9, is he out of his mind or what?

Core 3 only has one year contract left and I wouldn’t be suprised if he would want to continue without them, no wonder they got minimal screentime.

  10. Comment by mark in May 27, 2010 @ 6:46 am

ok but look at it from his view his show the one he created if it gets close to 200 yes tht will be appealing is he gonna say no to a full season? s s9? i wouldnt and if s8 is great and it has the potential to be so i wouldnt mind a s9 if its gd. but ill also be fine with just s8 he was just talking options and possibilities and if leyton returned say end of s8 i bet half the haters would love to have a s9 and im not blaming leyton fans cus i know ill get accused of tht lol

  11. Comment by abisola in May 27, 2010 @ 7:13 am

pls bring back lucas and peyton 4 season 8 it will be more interesting when they are in the movie.

  12. Comment by vick in May 27, 2010 @ 9:56 am

mark leyton will not coming back its obvious and if by some miracle they returned would be for 1 episode so i dont get what this would have to do with people wanting a season 9

  13. Comment by Mary in May 27, 2010 @ 10:26 am

Mary, why does it have to about blaming Leyton fans? I’m not a Leyton fan, and definitely don’t want a 9th season at all. I just want the series to be given proper closure this season, and that is all. It’s pretty obvious Mark is running out of ideas, and he should want to end the show the right way.

  14. Comment by jen in May 27, 2010 @ 10:34 am

I don’t get the ripping on Mark thing. If you really hate the show that much at this point then stop watching. I thought Grey’s got bad so I just stopped watching but I don’t rip it on message boards. Will I watch a season 9, probably not I’ve watched the show from my freshman year of high school and through next year my senior year of college and that’s probably enough. But it’s a tough job market and you can’t blame the guy for wanting to see his show on as long as possible from both a pride and stability standpoint. Honestly besides wearing beanies and long sleeves in LA summers what has CMM been up to? Probably wishing he had a job. Mark said he would make the fans happy and he really does have a way with finales so I expect the same next season, end or not.

  15. Comment by mark in May 27, 2010 @ 11:02 am

i wasnt trying to blame leyton fans of which i am one i was merely saying some of the haters dnt like the show cus they left and thts fine but some want the show to end bc they left or tht its not as gd without them (and tht is not based on anything in particular here just an observation of the internet) but thts not fair on people who still love the show and my point was tht if IF they came bk some people would change their tunes towards more seasons and its not like i desperately want s9 ill be fine with 8 but if the chance comes up will i turn it down? no but thts just me. anyway.

  16. Comment by Erin in May 27, 2010 @ 11:40 am

wow, he’s unbelievable. I thought the whole point of another season was to wrapped things up properly. I don’t know if I can continue watching a show that never ends.

  17. Comment by Mirrie in May 27, 2010 @ 2:14 pm

Lets pray that S8 is the last! Offcourse with a beautiful ending…

  18. Comment by Ethan in May 27, 2010 @ 2:53 pm

    Wow…..everyone here is unbelievable. Truly.

Mark SAID he doesn’t expect the show to go on forever and forever. But he is right, the show is going fairly strong right now…so why not?

I would probably be OK with S8 being it’s last. But is it that horrible if we got further than that? Season 7 has been one of the best seasons I’ve seen…definitely the best since the high school years. And I am a Leyton fan…but the show has proven it can still stay strong without them.

  19. Comment by Elsa in May 27, 2010 @ 3:06 pm

^Brooke & Nathan fans would disagree.

I liked s7 but i didn’t like how Brooke & NH were separated and how Brooke & Nathan took a backseat for the new characters.

Also Grubbs could just disappear and that would be awesome.

  20. Comment by Jennifer in May 27, 2010 @ 7:12 pm

I really wanted a season 8 for the sole reason that I wanted the storylines for Nathan, Haley, and Brooke wrapped up. I’ll be happy with a full or half season. I don’t see James, Joy, or Sophia signing on for another season after this one. I will admit though that there were a few times during this season that I wondered if the reason the secondary characters were getting so much screentime was because he might try to continue the show without the core. I completely understand Mark wanting the show to get to 200 episodes because that’s a huge milestone for him, but if James, Joy, and Sophia aren’t signed on, which i doubt they will be, then it just needs to end this season. I’d much rather it end this season and go all out for the final season and hopefully that’s what will happen!

  21. Comment by Mo in May 27, 2010 @ 8:24 pm

I think season 8 needs to be the last season. It gives Mark time to make all the fans happy. The stories are repeating and if we give Mark more seasons that means everyones couple is in trouble of a triangle storyline or a break up. You can only do a happy couple for so long. Season 8 came down to last minute and for everyone not knowing if the last show was going to be it, it did not do that great IMO. It is also going up against Glee next season so it is going to be interesting. Anyway, as for CMM isn’t there a rumor he has a movie in pre-production?

  22. Comment by ed fury in May 27, 2010 @ 11:02 pm

If they could write decent stories again I’d love to see 2 or 3 more seasons. If they keep doing story lines like letting Brooke get her happy ending just to keep some of the fan base from bashing them on various blogs then it needs to end after 13 episodes.

  23. Comment by kelly in May 28, 2010 @ 12:03 am

i highly doubt the cw will even renew oth for a 9th season. from all the reports the show is expensive to produce. so like i said this is probably the last season, and i bet mark knows that.

  24. Comment by hotandtwisted in May 28, 2010 @ 12:27 am

Finish strong with season 8 and go out on a high note!

  25. Comment by Danika in May 28, 2010 @ 2:07 am

It’s so expensive to produce because they seem to have at least 10-15 secondary characters throughout the season. Cut back on the secondary characters, give Nathan, Brooke and Haley more time (especially together!) and I’ll be happy. I’ll even be happy with another season after this but if the season consists of putting Nathan and Brooke on the backburner for a big chunk of the season and giving a lot of time to secondary characters.. let season 8 be the last.

  26. Comment by Haley in May 28, 2010 @ 6:33 am

I cant believe everyone is bashing Mark, its not being greedy wanting more seasons, its his job, its his show and he loves producing it, why would it be greedy for him to want to reach that 200 episode milestone?
However most likely its not gonna be renewed for a season 9, it was already such a close call with season 8, but if it is renewed, then stop complaining on here, its very simple to just not watch the show.
Hope season 8 is amazing and ends beautifully :)

  27. Comment by kelly in May 28, 2010 @ 5:37 pm

^^^i think he knows that there is a 99% chance the show wont be give a 9th season. from the way he talks in the interview he is ready to give oth a good ending.

  28. Comment by Lauren in June 10, 2010 @ 12:48 am

Do you think we’ll see a return of Lucas or Peyton? Peyton is Brooke’s best friend afterall, she kinda needs to be in the wedding. If not, I still love Lucas and Peyton but Im happy the show is still going strong.
