8.17 The Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get Reaction

Posted by Amy with 47 Comments

Dear Mark, I know we’ve discussed this before but I really need you to write every single OTH episode. kthxbai

  • I loved Haley testing everyone on the delivery.
  • I loved Millie and Mouth.  Good to see her doing something new and I really did find her funny.
  • Yay for Brooke and Julian getting a baby early!  I wish they knew the sex!
  • I’m back to being “eh” on Ian (wrote before I saw the very end).  And leave him alone, Alex!  What is with that?  added: I can’t believe he’s the guy with the car.  Ugh!
  • Chase and Chuck are cute but I’m not good with seeing Chuck more than Jamie.
  • And yay!  Khloe and Haley are having babies at the same time!

One of the best episodes lately, what’d you think?

One of the best episodes lately, what’d you think?

Not really. i think last week was alot better. The episode was okay at best.

i am sorry but i can only agree on the first point, about haley testing everyone out. that was funny and great.

everything else was just blah. Chloe and Haley having the baby’s at the same time.. no it’s more like brooke will have her baby, and maybe they’ll show haley having a baby.

no big surprise about the car when Nathan discovered it

chuck and chase.. really? i mean, really ?! all that to get glasses. and alex and ian, wtf random sht was that.

no mark, not your best work. from episode 12 to present has been choppy work at best. the whole mid season missed the mark, pun intended.

    1. they practically ignored nathan as a father to be. they focus in on julian being a father more than nathan, nathan couldn’t even offer julian any talk about having kids, last time I checked, he was going to be a dad, what about nathan’s baby room!?

    2. Naley fans have been thrown under the bus for the past SEVERAL episodes. V-day was disappointing, no talk of the baby. last week was the first real conversation about the baby since maybe episode 8.01. they didn’t give naley a SL at all this season despite the fact that haley is pregnant. They haven’t even made Nathan or Jamie part of the pregnancy. We couldn’t even see nathan’s reaction to having a girl and of course he got no say when naming the baby. Haley discussed it with Quinn first. Shouldn’t haley have told Nathan of her idea first and then run it by quinn?

    3. how boring was brooke’s wedding. Yes the ceremony and everything was lovely. Good for Bju but what about everything else. There was no drama, nothing. They could’ve still had brooke have her day but other character’s could’ve had some drama but no nothing.

    4. chase and chuck. It was cute for one episode and now, its too much.

    5. why is quinn and clay so happy and carefree together. Why not give them so drama, why don’t they break them up. Why is julian so 1-dimensional. We got to see his mom but no other relatives or friends, or anything. He really felt like he was written in just to give brooke a husband. They completely watered down his character this season.

I’m looking forward to april but what’s annoying is that I’m more frustrated with the show than anything else. I fear what could be a juicy storyline with ian and finally giving something Nathan to sink his teeth into and get mad and angry about and show us some spark ,but I feel like its going to be wasted. Like what they’ve done with Nathan all season, wasted away.

i liked that it finally ended on a cliffhanger but overall, i just feel frustrated with the show ever since brooke’s wedding.

I couldn’t disagree more. I thought the episode was awful, but I’m a Nathan/Haley fan and, once again, they got nothing, which is par for the course this season. I’m pretty sure the episode description said “Nathan and Haley prepare for the birth”. I guess Nathan didn’t get that memo since he doesn’t seem to care that his wife is having his child. Sure he casually mentions that she’s pregnant, but he’s got frat parties to attend so to hell with being there for her. This season has been a total fail on all fronts, but especially in terms of Nathan & Haley.

  3. Comment by Alex76 in March 1, 2011 @ 10:45 pm

I know this is petty, I do…but Khloe is totally stealing Haley’s thunder. Seriously, I’ve spent this entire season moaning and groaning about how Nathan and Haley have hardly shared any moments concerning the pregnancy, and here Brulian and Khloe (is that her name?) come, swooping in out of the blue with their pregnancy experience just as Naley are reaching the finish line.

Haley went to her appointment alone, she told Jamie the sex alone, she chose the name herself and just told Nathan afterwards. This is a storyline I’ve been waiting for since season 5, that I was so excited for after the season 7 finale. And yet Brooke and Julian basically had the pregnancy moment I’d been waiting months for, getting the baby’s room ready, just being excited, together. What were Nathan and Haley doing? Nathan was off, playing beer pong, helping Julian pick baby room colors even though his own wife is ready to pop. And now that she’s giving birth, it’s obvious that Naley are going to be the B-storyline, the drama-less background that ultimately services Brooke’s possibly impending motherhood. I adore Brooke, and I usually have no problem with her screentime, but… This is just salt in the wound.

I generally found this episode emotionless and just a mouthpiece for Mark’s really long rant about cell phones, but, I am a disgruntled Naley fan, so nothing new here.

  4. Comment by othfan in March 1, 2011 @ 10:55 pm

    alex76,

i completely agree. i really want to ask mark, WTF are you doing ?? The show has been so predictable lately and yet the things that we should expect from naley, parents to be, we don’t get ! i dont get it, i really dont.

  5. Comment by Melly in March 1, 2011 @ 11:33 pm

I have to agree with all the posts here. As a naley fan we have been cheated at what could have been an amazing pregnancy storyline but instead we have been shafted all season.

I love that Brulian are getting a baby but does it seriously have to trump over Naley’s kid?

I thought the episode was ok, nothing amazing and nowhere near the best episode of the season. I can’t stand Ian, and Chase and Chuck are getting annoying, Millie and Mouth are a snooze and Kellerman’s a douche! Bring back Dan!

  6. Comment by Tia in March 1, 2011 @ 11:45 pm

the end! oh my gosh! what if Nate has dan help bring down kellerman!
and omg Nates expression at the ned! hot!!

    @ addison & alex76
    PERFECTLY SAID.
the lack of naley is not even annoying anymore, iexpect the disappointment week after week :(
that’s all i need to say.

  9. Comment by Alex in March 2, 2011 @ 12:59 am

Episode was great as usual. Naley has been fine this season, so what if they’re not the center of attention right now, they were for the previous 7 years! Complainers go away!

  10. Comment by laura in March 2, 2011 @ 1:01 am

i understand naley fans feeling like they are being totally forgotten, but you have to remember bjg was actually pregnant while filming these eps. she probably needed reduced work as a result. i know it sucks when the characters you love aren’t the main focus but it happens to everyone. and totally agree – its really strange that nathan is not involved AT ALL with the baby storyline.

that being said, i hate how much time mouth/millie/alex/chuck/chase are getting. they’ve never been the focus of the show for me. i have a REALLY difficult time caring about their storylines.

normally not the biggest fan of quinn either but lately she’s been cracking me up. loved her toaster strudel song tonight.

  11. Comment by Pauline in March 2, 2011 @ 1:07 am

One way for me to feel like I was watching old OTH again is if they focus more on Naley since because both of those characters have been around since Season 1.

  12. Comment by Jess in March 2, 2011 @ 1:13 am

Eh, I thought this episode was boring and the lack of NH is irritating. Hopefully there will be some good NH next week but I’m not counting on it.

  13. Comment by erin in March 2, 2011 @ 1:58 am

I actually found Haley testing everyone kinda annoying. I liked it at first but then it just got old. I wish they had done more with her than just running the same joke over and over. I actually think I would have been okay with it if they had her do other things too (Note: I KNOW this is impractical due to Joy’s pregnancy. I’,, just sayin…).

Yay for baby proofing. But I really hope they don’t paint the babies room black. Good thing Julian didn’t faint when Chloe said she was pregnant.

OOOOO Kellerman, tisk tisk. I knew that this was going to happen (as much as I try not to I read spoilers), but I didn’t know how we would find out. That was good.

So sad we have to wait over a month for the next chapter (although the next three weeks at school are INSANE for me, so not having OTH to distract me may be a good thing)

ps- site mods idk if it is just my computer but one of the ads on the sight cuts off the very right hand side of the comment box so you cant read the last few letters you type. Just an FYI.

  14. Comment by Jess in March 2, 2011 @ 2:06 am

My mistake on my comment I didn’t mean next week I meant next episode, since it won’t come till over a month. Lol. But, I’m really hoping I get some good NH in that episode with their new born.

  15. Comment by Sara in March 2, 2011 @ 4:23 am

Horrible episode, as a NH fan I feel totally upset with the writers. They don’t seem to care about NHJ & baby at all.

  16. Comment by Sam in March 2, 2011 @ 7:15 am

i thought it was a great episode.. can’t wait for the few last ones !

  17. Comment by Kris in March 2, 2011 @ 8:48 am

I honestly was a big fan of this episode. It got much better after the half hour mark but honestly, I didn’t like the first 30 minutes much. What is with all of the random dialogue? Quinn’s song was kind of cute only because I do stupid stuff like that when I’m alone too but when they kept going with that stupid toaster pastry product placement BS, I was getting annoyed. The scene with all the guys was another example of a scene that went nowhere because of stupid dialogue. What was with the phone crap? It was like they were trying to fill time.

As I said, it got much better in the second half (mostly thanks to the better dialogue) the twist with Ian was good although I have no idea where they’re going with him and Alex. I like that they are putting her with Chase again though. I’m so happy for Brooke but I honestly feel like this is the episode where the focus should have been on Naley and I do hope the focus is on them next episode cause Brooke’s baby storyline really has taken up the past 5 seasons. They should give Brooke some really great moments but the focus should be on them.

  18. Comment by Kris in March 2, 2011 @ 8:49 am

I meant to say “I honestly wasn’t a big fan of the episode”

  19. Comment by weenie in March 2, 2011 @ 8:55 am

Stupid episode with so many miss opprotunities. I agree with all the Naley comments and I hated Brulian more in this episode than any other. That whole scene in the paint store was cringe worthy!!! I hate that Chloe is having the baby at the same time with Haley, because it will ALL focus on how excited Brulian are……… sickening! I really wish Brulian would go off to LA, but no such luck. Julian fainting????? Nathan the robot!!! End it!!!

  20. Comment by SMB in March 2, 2011 @ 9:23 am

    Tonight’s episode was Ridiculous!
Haley fake-labor-test was the only ~good~ thing about it everything else was lame.

I now really hate Clay/Nathan scenes and whatever boring Sl revolving around them! the writing of Nathan makes him seem so ditached from Haley and his coming baby, it makes me so sad. the lack of Naley is so depressing :(

    Chuck/Chase.. the definition of POINTLESS!

    Mouth/Milie meh ok i guess.

everything else is just gaahh frustratingly bad!! too many missed opportunities!!

  21. Comment by Amanda in March 2, 2011 @ 9:29 am

I don’t know if anyone has said this or not but i really liked all the guys in the beginning together at the restaurant. Talking about the cell phones and texts. I thought that was kind of funny :) I also really enjoyed seeing Haley test everyone out!

  22. Comment by Pucassucks in March 2, 2011 @ 9:46 am

I have to agree with you Amy I loved this episode ecspecially the random conversation with the boys in the cafe. best epeisode for a long time and we finally had a ‘OMG’ moment at the end. It was hard to read Nathans reaction, whether he was mad or disappointed. thumbs up from me

  23. Comment by bootsie in March 2, 2011 @ 10:20 am

I don’t really understand all the hostility over Haley’s SECOND pregnancy. She’s had a kid for years now, and yes, it’s great she’s getting another one before the series ends, but come on, it’s normal to not focus on someone’s SECOND pregnancy all the time. Brooke, on the other hand, has wanted a baby for YEARS, it’s not something they just threw in at the last minute to purposely dilute the second pregnancy of Haley and steal her reproductive thunder. Brooke had whole seasons where she had like one kissing scene and nothing interesting whatsoever, while her entire love life history was rewritten, but the complaining was NOTHING like what is so relentless on every single website.
I like NH a lot, and their Valentine’s Day scenes were the best of that episode, why can’t people just understand she’s REALLY pregnant and perhaps that affected some of the scenes, timing, etc.
I’m so tired of all the relentless negativity – so what if Brooke gets a baby at the same time? It the END of the show. The Nathan Scott household has been featured for years and years. We’ve had shows featuring Haley’s singing for years and years, yet nothing is ever enough it seems like.
That having been said, I was a little disappointed with the episode too, although I did like the random dialogue and stuff, it’s kind of pointless but also strangely entertaining because we all have those kind of weird conversations. And product placement never bothers me – I think it’s weirder when shows always show people drinking generic soda and eating generic cereal and whatever, it doesn’t seem authentic.
(I think the adoption story would’ve been better too, weenie, by the way. I always think it’s noteworthy when we agree on something).

  24. Comment by JSLove in March 2, 2011 @ 10:31 am

I agree with bootsie. NH isn’t being thrown under the bus completely; but I think it’s time we focus on Brooke having her baby like she’s always wanted.

  25. Comment by OZ in March 2, 2011 @ 11:16 am

Totally agree with Bootsie. Could not have said it better. While I could always use more Naley moments, and have been disappointed by the lack of the old Naley romance, it’s difficult with Joy herself having a baby. Besides, with Brooke’s kind of disappointing wedding (there was just something missing, I was expecting more, even though she was beautiful and it was sweet, still…), why shouldn’t she have some thunder of having an exciting baby storyline? She’s been wanting a baby for years and she deserves this. Also with Haley’s labor and finding out Kellerman is responsible for the accident, I think we will get to see Nathan as caring and protective husband, father, and friend. So let’s be patient, I think the characters and story will be redeemed.

Some other thoughts (bear with me)
    - Chloe seems a little strange. Maybe I’m just jaded with all the psychos of the past but something is a little off about her. With Brooke’s bad luck, who knows maybe Chloe will change her mind.
    - Ian Kellerman might be the baby daddy. Something she said in one of the scenes makes me think this and besides OTH has a way of connecting everything and everyone in some strange ways. No complaints. I happen to like the weird connections. It’s TV after all.
-The old station wagon and the expensive looking drink makes me think that the drive could be Prof. Kellerman not Ian. Again, OTH kind of twist>
    - The obvious product placement and random talk def weird, but whatever we all do it.

  26. Comment by Danika in March 2, 2011 @ 11:56 am

Yeah, I understand that Haley’s had a kid before, but I just wish they had included Nathan a little more in this, ya know? Of course I wish Brooke wasn’t having a kid at the same time and that the focus will probably be on Brulian next episode but I get that they have to show her with a kid after wanting one all these years since this is the last season. And then there’s the fact that Joy was pregnant so they had to limit her scenes or whatever but I just don’t get why they couldn’t include Nathan! I don’t mind not having more scenes cause we got it before, that’s fine. But Nathan is a huge part of this so why is he being thrown on the backburner for this pregnancy? It’s like Haley is alone in all of this! Okay, there were a few cutesy moments with them about the pregnancy but like telling Jamie the sex of the baby should have been both of them. Oh and why have I not seen this scene? Haha, I must have missed it somehow… oh well. Anyways! I think why most of us Naley fans are ranting like crazy about lack of screentime even though every character has had to go through it at some point or another is the fact that it’s the last season and it would be nice if we got to see more of them. I understand why we aren’t, it just sucks, haha. But I’m happy for Brooke and Julian!

  27. Comment by NO MORE BRULIAN AND CLINN in March 2, 2011 @ 12:13 pm

OH GOD ANOTHER POINTLESS EPISODE? I SEEN PEOPLE ARE SAYING NALEY ARE HAVING A BABY, ARE THEY REALLY? I THOUGHT THE WHOLE SHOW REVOLVED AROUND BROOKE AND JULIAN, I HAD NO IDEA THERE WERE ANY OTHER CHARACTERS.

AND PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, GET RID OF THAT HIDEOUS ACTRESS, SHANTEL. SHE CANNOT ACT AND HER CHARACTER BRINGS NOTHING AT ALL TO THE SHOW. CLAY USED TO BE OK BUT HE IS POINTLESS NOW TOO

TOO MUCH BRULIAN + QUINN = GARBAGE

  28. Comment by Princess in March 2, 2011 @ 1:43 pm

You know what after seeing last night’s episode, it made me upset to see that they don’t use basketball anymore. Whatever happen to basketball??? That’s what the show had all these years. Baseball is boring!!! Mouth seriously needs a job because him and Millie’s storyline is boring as hell. @no more brulian and clinn, they need to get rid of Alex, she’s pointless too. What’s going on with Kate Voegele is she making anymore music??? Quinn and Clay doesn’t have anything there. Over the years (3-5,7) the show laways focus on Naley’s life, her music, his basketball dreams, their marriage being a struggle. Now I kinda miss it, but it’s Brooke tern. Season 6-Leyton, season 7-Naley season 8-Brulian.
So while OTH is taking a break I’m gonna be watching my DVD’s. I wonder what Nathan will do to Ian after he saw the car, I knew it was him I said that “I knew it was that SOB.” The episode was good, not too bad.

  29. Comment by Princess in March 2, 2011 @ 1:45 pm

  30. Comment by swede in March 2, 2011 @ 1:49 pm

Nathan kept telling people that he has a pregnant wife, but sometimes I wonder if he knows it himself? SO disappointed. And i understand that Joy is(was) pregnant, and that limits her screentime, but WHY is all her scenes with everyone but James? It has nothing to do with her pregnancy, I don’t care that she has few scenes, what irritates me is that the few scenes she does have, aren’t Naley scenes.

  31. Comment by Tia in March 2, 2011 @ 2:05 pm

PEOPLE you want Joy to have fake sex while she is REALLY pregnant?! The entire show was almost always Naley! Give Brooke a chance gosh!
JOY WAS REALLY PREGNANT WHEN THESE EPISODES WERE SHOT. seriously, how much do you expect a pregnant woman to do?!
For all you Naley lovers out there, give Joy a break okay?

maybe they are trying to get the other characters involved more so they can take over season 9? i doubt Joy is going to come back now she has a new baby in real life, and no Haley means no Nate and no Brooke. So maybe they are including the new characters so much so they can be the new ‘core characters’ of season 9

  32. Comment by lst in March 2, 2011 @ 2:29 pm

Has anyone noticed Brooke talking about Peyton in past tense? Really harsh from Mark!

  33. Comment by SMB in March 2, 2011 @ 2:30 pm

It’s not about not having NH “sexy” scenes, it’s about not having NH scenes period! Lol I don’t understand why almost all Haley and Nathan scenes are with other people except with eachother!

  34. Comment by Alex in March 2, 2011 @ 3:15 pm

@weenie, your pathetic with your rants.

  35. Comment by Alex76 in March 2, 2011 @ 3:16 pm

To the people who are saying the Naley complainers should consider that Joy is actually pregnant: first off, I agree with smb, I’m not even hoping for remotely sexy scenes anymore, that’s like begging for gold when you don’t even have bread. I just want some meaningful scenes, scenes with some kind of emotional intimacy (cough, 8.01 cough), sweet, even cheesy scenes, rather than Nathan calling Haley a dork and just going over each other’s schedules on their way out the door. I want to see proof that they actually love each other, because for the first time in eight seasons, it’s starting to feel forced to me.

Second, I love and respect Joy and her right to have a personal life. But I don’t understand why Joy being pregnant in real life should influence the portrayal of intimacy between two FICTIONAL characters. None of the fake kissing, the touching, whatever, is supposed to mean anything to the two actors, it’s just choreography. And because it doesn’t mean anything, it shouldn’t matter what is going on with the actors’ personal lives behind the scenes. If it does mean something to either of them, they’re doing it wrong, and James and Joy know this, they’re professionals. Pregnant actresses have worked long and hard to dispell the notion that being pregnant affects their ability or willingness to perform.

It is, obviously, Joy and Michael’s prerogative to feel how they want about depictions of Joy’s body on screen, so if do honestly feel uncomfortable with it, it’s not my place to judge. However, if this is the case, then as a fan, I personally wish they’d have let Joy leave the show, or take an extended leave of absence, because watching Nathan and Haley being depicted like they no longer are really involved with each other’s lives is worse than not having them on my screen but knowing that they’re still happy and in love. JMO.

Lastly, to the posters who point out that Naley have had their moment in the sun, I’d just like to say that, I don’t think complainers like myself are asking for anything more than just maintaining the Naley relationship the way it has been for the last 7 years. Especially if this is the last season, this is the time that we would like to spend the most time with our favorite characters before we have to say goodbye. I would also like to snort at the notion that Naley have EVER had the spotlight before season 7. They’ve always been treated as the secondary or tertiary storyline. The difference with this season (and season 6, which I hate less thanks to this season) is now they don’t have a storyline at all. At best, they’re the comic relief. Anyways, apologies for the rant. Looking forward to the hiatus.

@ALEX76 well said ITAWU,I mean not even having a romantic date or dinner. They have not been acting like a couple but two people living in the same house. No significant conversations nada.In s6 they have been mostly apart but we get to have those phone conversations we knew they were connected and important to each other.I am not happy with the way Naley has been treated they have always been the heart and soul of the show..They are one of the best TV couple and the least they could have given us is that hope and belief on freaking true love before it all ends.I am starting to think Joy and James hate each other in RL.So dissapointing.

What have happend? One Tree Hill was the best show ever. Season 1-6 & especially 1-4! those seasons is GREAT! love every episode of it! Honestly, i enjoyed it more when they went to High School. A lot more. But season 5 & 6 were great & season 7 was also pretty good, but season 8, WTF? Or, i enjoyed some episodes actually, especially the one were jamie & brooke almost died & i LOVED the hangover-episode! But Brulians wedding, it was good, sure, but not near as good as Leytons & Naleys second wedding. I LOVE One Tree hill, but season 8 .. it’s just not One tree hill! The first seasons were so damn good, love them! Season 6 had a great ending, they could have stopped there. But still, season 8 is good! But not as near as season 1-6. Sorry for my bad english.

  46. Comment by Princess in March 3, 2011 @ 1:11 pm

Mouth and Millie moments are bad in season 8, what ever happend to having Brooke and Mouth moments like the old days? I miss them. Bring back Skills, season 8 has too much comedy in it. I think Mark is going fast forward with Brooke’s pregnancy because this might actually be the last season though I’m hoping for another one.
