8.19 Where Not To Look For Freedom Reaction

Posted by Amy with 25 Comments

Hm, how do I say this?  That episode was just ok for me.  There were some good spots though.

  • I loved seeing the fire back in Nathan.  I especially loved the calm sort-of passive aggressive tone he took with Jamie against Kellerman in class.
  • And also loved Julian for the same.  Nice seeing him have a little storyline on his own.
  • As for the storyline, I don’t think it was a big shock that Jr was the real culprit.  I’m glad Nathan finally started putting the pieces together at the end.
  • I feel so bad for Brooke.  And honestly, I kind of like seeing this side of Brooke.  Fun Brooke is fun sometimes but I like the deep, a little depressed Brooke too.  I hope she takes the job in NY.  It is sad for her to leave Tree Hill, but it really is a great offer.
  • Seeing Haley with the baby was awesome.  I just love that her real-life pregnancy was played out on the show instead of trying to hide it.  I think because of it many have been endeared to Haley and even moreso Joy.  Sharing that experience on-screen and a little through her blog and Twitter I think as a fan has really been fantastic.  So thank you, Joy, for letting the audience share that with you a bit.
  • Really good to see Mouth and Skills but not good to see the news about the Rivercourt.  Would be super sad to see that go.
  • I super duper LOVE Alex/Jana’s song.  I think she’s a great performer and she’s got a great sound!  And seriously, I’m not just saying that.

Seems like tonight maybe wasn’t so bad as much as it was just a set up to what looks like an insane next two weeks!

What’d you think?

I’ve said many times before, but where are the NALEY scenes…yes we got scenes w/jamie and nate and them w/the baby…we got brooke/quinn and of course haley w/the baby…where are the parents spending time w/the baby together. I’m getting irritated and annoyed. I do feel bad for brulian and new the young kellerman was the culprit not the professor. Quinn was funny tonite and mouth. Overall it was ok. BRING BACK NALEY SCENES PLEASE IM GOING CRAZY ;)

Much better than last week. You have the car accident, brooke going to ny and river court situation, where was this in the past 5 episodes?

James did a better job looking mad, I sort of felt his words were forced but Austin’s lines felt really forced at parts and I am wondering why nathan isn’t as mad as julian. im glad julian called him out on it. I wish it was nathan tackling ian but oh well. no surprise it was really ian and his dad taking the fall, I think the audience didn’t need the re-cap, I think it was pretty obvious what was going to happen when he ordered shots and that’s how it should’ve ended.

brooke, I say you go to nyc

didn’t really need to hear quinn singing, alex has a great voice but not a big fan of country. thought her song ran a little too long.

finally we get to see Nathan with lydia.. but of course, everything with nathan and his family is lacking. where was a naley scene, we get a ton of sad brooke and julian, we cant get one happy naley, I can go on but the whole thing already gave me a head ache. joy had plenty of scenes and yet none could be shared with nathan, am I surprised no. I know for a fact that the only quality scott family moment we will get is in the finale. don’t expect anything next week for naley.

overall much better than last week, still a little too much bju but at least there was a bigger spread this week in the other characters. but I was left wondering the whole why they didn’t do this earlier. we knew that thing with kellerman was going down and then bam we have brooke and bam river court is gone. at least theres finally some drama and I am looking forward to some confrontation with ian.

I don’t like country music but Jana has a good song. I like her original character with the super sharp tongue and the bitterly stinging personal comments. Sometimes when Mark writes these characters and their ‘redemption’ arcs they change into something a little to bland for my tastes.

I missed lots of this episode with severe weather break ins. I hope they re-run it this summer so I can DVR a better version.

I need to rewatch but I thought there were some day/night/day scenes that didn’t fit the time line properly for this episode.

And the sound editing is still terrible. Yelling in a trashcan every episode. So much distortion and feedback and everything has a metal ringing sound to it.

Agree with everything @Amy. I loved the whole episode! Can’t wait for next week!

Ok I am going to give my opinion. First I want to say I let Amy do the reaction most of the time because if I am totally honest guys I am one that trys to look at the positive. Now if something sucks well I will let you know but for the most part I am fairly easy. So for tonight a few of my thoughts…
I actually liked the episode. Not so bad compared to others.
    – Love seeing Haley with the baby and I agree with Amy and her thoughts!!
    – Kellerman and Ian – I actually didn’t know this ahead of time. I did have the feeling this was how it was going to turn out and I was ok with it. I know many wanted someone else to have hit Brooke and Jamie but you know for new characters i thought it was ok and I was impressed with what Professor Kellerman did for his son no matter how much of a jerk he is. Kind of makes you think Kellerman is not so bad and it still goes along with the lines of Nathan and his father in a slightly different way. Just my opinion. AND it looks like the boys are going to be active next week!! Yes?
-I don’t know why we aren’t seeing more Nathan and Haley scenes. Like most of you I wouldn’t mind seeing more of those sweet moments.
    – As far as Brooke and Julian I thought this episode was fine. Their scenes spread out and not really that long. I agree with Amy’s thoughts above.
-Love the music!! Jana was great
Ok So I am ready to see how next week goes :)

I think when this episode was filmed Joy was on maternity leave. They used a stand in and she filmed her scenes much later. I think we should show some respect for Joy, I mean she stuck through the whole season pregnant!

  8. Comment by John in April 27, 2011 @ 12:09 am

I still think the assumption that it was definitely Ian might turn out wrong. At no point has that been definitevly proven, and unless the writers are jerking people around, the whole Alex not drinking/Alex glasses and Alex and Ian combo make absolutely no storyline sense as of yet. It would make sense that Prof Kellerman may not know and jumped to protect his son, but I’m intrigued as to the hanging fruit this storyline can bare.

  9. Comment by ed fury in April 27, 2011 @ 1:19 am

Alex was driving Ian in Kellerman’s car?

  10. Comment by mm in April 27, 2011 @ 2:02 am

i thought it was an ok episode. i would have liked to see more of brulian dealing with the fallout of the adoption though.
the way the guys dealt with the accident was horrendous. at least julian was angry about it, nathan barely seemed to care. than again, it really not surprising for nathan to be bored all the time

    OTH FanZone
An empty crib, a baseball field, bottom of a liquor bottle, anger, frustration, boys & booze, your 7 year old son, an office with no text books, or a 2nd place ribbon: all of these are places that one should not look for freedom. Ignoring this fact these are the places the residents of Tree Hill journeyed tonight!!
Jamie. Angie. Sam. An empty crib? The first clip of Brooke folding the pink (I thought they didn’t know the sex of the baby, yet everything in that house was PINK!!) blanket was heart wrenching. Julian was right she does make sad look beautiful, and it seems as of late that Peyton had more of a broody, sad effect on Brooke than we EVER realized! For the past few seasons Brooke sure had been able to shed those crocodile tears and pouty lips! That being said my heart breaks for her. I know how much she wants to be a mom. She was great with little Jamie and Angie in season 5 and Sam in season 6. I hope she gets what she wants, but how about that COB offer! And Victoria calling COB her “baby”, but I think Vicky was self projecting. She was the one that wanted the company and not the daughter as she made very clear to us and Brooke many times. Brooke however is different she does want the baby. I believe her agreeing to go to New York is just out of sadness and desperation. I don’t see her actually leaving Tree Hill. It is her home and she has said that many times. She will come to her senses. FINGERS CROSSED!!!!
Haley, I love you! I know that your scenes tonight were limited, but they were a real treat! You don’t really have to do much to speak to the crowd. Just the simple act of making little Lydia “walk” was too cute for words. I loved it. And I love seeing you bond with Lydia. We didn’t get to see much of that stuff with Jamie, so I am glad we are getting it now!
Quinn… filling Peyton’s role or was it Haley’s role. Since when did she yield the power to book a band!!?? That kind of threw me for a loop. It was a nice loop, seeing has how we got some amazing music this episode…. Also really liked the idea of having the video set up for Hales!! Great way to include her!! Also “Eye of the Tiger” Great song and I enjoyed it much better than the toaster strudel song!! So thanks! But did she really have to sing it twice!
The guys!!! Seeing as how they were all working together for the same goal, I will group them together. Loved Julian’s passion. Nathan could have stepped up his game a bit! Also using Jamie as a prop in his war was a little low! As a parent I would have never done that! But oh well! Not really too much to say about this, other than the fact that I am glad Nathan finally came to the right conclusion!! On a separate note, I was unhappy to see that Nathan was the last person to have a scene with Lydia! Then Haley wasn’t even in it!! Really?? Not cool!
Mouth and Mille!! I know I say this every week… but they are BY FAR my favorite couple!! These two are so magical to me!! Loved the bit between them two in the beginning!! Then I loved them dancing on the river court!!! Amazing shot!! I really want to see a Mouth and Millie wedding!!! SSSSOOOOOO BAD!!! Maybe if we get another season I will see it!!! Again fingers crossed! Another side note; Loved Skills being back and I hope we get to hear the piece that Millie writes on the river court!
Alex! I really do LOVE her character!! I have seen great improvement with her! Plus she freaking kicks bum on stage! Her and Chase are meant to be! You can tell by the way they kiss!! Again Quinn reminded me of Peyton when she went behind the bar to talk to Chase! That was so a Peyton move!! I think Mark has channeled his love and obsession for Peyton on to Quinn!!! Like seriously!
Ian and Daddy Kellerman! I believe we all saw that coming! I even guessed how Nate would find out before he did. I wish it would have been revealed in a different way! Like Jamie going to the ball field and hearing him talk on the phone or something! This is sooooo cookie cutter! However I am excited for the next one when Nate throws Ian over the bridge!! That is soooo 3rd season right there!!! Jumping into the water, just this time he is taking someone with him!!! I also wonder what the issue is between the father and son! I hope they shed some light on that!! And how mean was it that he took the pic of the dog but not his son!!! Wow!
So anyway: I give the episode a positive 8! It was great. Could have been better! However again the music was amazing! Julian and Alex were the scene stealers tonight! For sure!!!

It looked to me like it was Julian who pushes Ian over the bridge, not Nathan. I could be wrong though.

  13. Comment by Ryan in April 27, 2011 @ 10:22 am

I agree with everything that Amy said except that I have to say I felt like it was selfish of Brooke to decide it was okay to move to New York for her career when she drove out into a storm when Julian suggested moving for his.

  14. Comment by ann in April 27, 2011 @ 10:40 am

Clay is the one who pushes him. if you pause, you can see clearly that both nate and julian are standing there.

  15. Comment by onehotscott23 in April 27, 2011 @ 11:37 am

@ ann….you are right! I paused it and you can clearly see Nathan and Julian standing there as the other two go over the bridge. I don’t get why Clay would be the one pushing him over though because the two people Ian could have killed was Brooke and Jamie. Still looks like an excellent episode, can’t wait!

  16. Comment by Princess in April 27, 2011 @ 12:12 pm

Get Quinn off the show, she is horrible!!! Alex can’t sing, all she does is flirt with Chase.

  17. Comment by Kris in April 27, 2011 @ 12:15 pm

I mostly agree with your reaction. It was a set-up episode so it was good in parts but overall just ok. Loved Jana’s song but I felt like too little of the episode was actual progression. There were so many scenes between Quinn, Alex, Millie, Mouth, Clay… that just went nowhere. It was like Mark didn’t have enough material tonight so he put a bunch of filler scenes in. Brooke’s storyline was good, its nice to see her getting her company back and I like her scene with Haley. I liked all of the stuff with Nathan/Julian/Kellerman but I agree the son was painfully obvious. It would have been better if Nathan had assumed it was the son (like all of us did) and then later found out it was the professor. That would have been much more of a shock.

  18. Comment by Jenn in April 27, 2011 @ 12:30 pm

I think it is julian that pushes him.. it looks liek clay and nathan are standing there i you pause it at like the 12 13 second mark

  19. Comment by heather in April 27, 2011 @ 1:58 pm

for some reason, i NEVER thought it was the professor. I guess I didn’t realize the party ian was throwing was in his father’s house. I always thought it was ian, but i really do hope it turns out to be alex (since i found someone saying this a few weeks ago, it REALLY does tie up many other things in the past few episodes), but with only 3 episodes left, i doubt they’ll go there.

@jenn: notice julian’s shirt and you’ll have your answer. he’s wearing a jacket in the car, but his shirt is light blue. when ian goes over, nathan and julian (in the blue shirt) are standing side by side, so it HAS to be clay. this is probably a way of finally giving his character some more story line again instead of just being quinn’s boy toy.

@ed fury: i’m a few years late on all the discussion lol, but watching the seasons one episode after another, i have noticed as well that they editing in this show is for crap! so many things are inconsistent. the one that always bothers me the most is nathan and haley’s wedding. i’m sure this has been pointed out many times before, but i just have to say it myself as i am late to the party lol.

obviously through flashbacks during s2 we realize that nathan and haley aren’t talking about having sex, they’re talking about getting married.

so going back to s1, she tells him, ‘tonight, after the game’. it’s DARK out after the game.

lucas comes over in the morning and haley tells him, ‘we got married last night’. back to s2, you see them get married during the daytime.

later on in s2, you see him bring her back home during the daytime, carry her over the threshold, and bring her to bed where they have sex for the first time. again, this all supposedly happened AFTER the game, when it was DARK out lol.

and then, the next morning, in their first scene of s2, it’s them waking up together for the first time as husband and wife.

and then nathan listens to his voicemail about dan’s heart attack, so WHEN did lucas show up? RIGHT before listening to the voicemail and before they got into the shower? wouldn’t nathan (at least in the real world) have called luke right away and said get back here, dan’s had a heart attack?

I’m probably waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay overthinking this lol, it’s just something that REALLY bothers me every time i see it. :) i realize thought, it was probably all afterthought because s2’s script probably had not yet been written to where they could have planned this out better, but still ergggghhhh, it’s irritating lol!

I don’t really agree on “deep, little depressed Brookd”. She has been like that for most of the past three seasons with all the children and Julian trouble and it doesn’t agree with het that much. I don’t mean the acting, Sophia does it well. Actually considering what’s happened I would like to see her kind of angrier. Not the parents but the situation and the amount of bad stuff that keeps happening. A bit of Peyton-like angst I guess.

  22. Comment by Princess in April 27, 2011 @ 2:35 pm

@heather I agree, I notice that too, like back in season 4 when Brooke celebrates her bithday and on the birth certicate it says she was born in March. Remember both Haley and Karen gave birth in June around Graduation, if Haley tell Nathan in 4.05 that she’s pregnant and she gave birth in June and Booke’s b-day is in March, shouldn’t her belly had a bump to it?

  23. Comment by onehotscott23 in April 27, 2011 @ 5:06 pm

Okay, back to who pushes Ian over the bridge. It definetly looks like Clay when you pause it but something is messed up because Austin tweeted on Feb. 17th “Big day tomorrow jumping off bridge into icy cold water, beating up a guy and holding him under water.” That leads me to believe it was Julian?? Guess we’ll have to wait and see.

  24. Comment by heather in April 27, 2011 @ 5:16 pm

maybe they all go in after clay knocks him off. i find it weird that they don’t just knock him off, but clay goes in too. i mean, dude just had a kidney transplant not too long ago lol.

  25. Comment by Lauren in April 28, 2011 @ 9:02 am

I’m not actually liking the accident storyline. From the moment Nathan saw the car it seemed obvious to me that it would’ve been the son — so it makes little sense IMO that Nathan jumped to the conclusion it was Kellerman, or that they dragged that storyline out for so long before showing the truth of the matter
