Season 5 Episode 2 Racing Like a Pro Transcript

Scene 1: The River Court.

(It cycles through scenes with the other characters as they are mentioned.)

Lucas (voiceover): My name is Lucas Scott.  Four years ago, I graduated from high school with my friends.  Brooke Davis moved to New York City and found success.  Peyton Sawyer went to Los Angeles, success didn’t come so easily.  I wrote a novel and fell for my editor Lindsey.  My brother Nathan saw his dreams vanish, leaving his wife Haley and their son Jamie more fractured than ever.  Things have changed in four years, but in many ways this is just the beginning.

Scene 2: Airport.

Brooke: I missed you P. Sawyer.  We’re home now.

Peyton: Come on.

(They leave the airport, and the title comes up.)

Scene 3: Lucas’ house.

(Brooke sneaks in and jumps on Lucas’ bed, only to be surprised to find it’s not Lucas sleeping.)

Brooke: Hah!

(The girls scream and Lindsey sits up.)

Brooke: You’re not Lucas!

Lindsey: You’re Brooke Davis.

Brooke: Yeah.  Hi, you’re… wearing me.  Clothes over Bros is my line.

Lindsey: Yeah.  I, I love it.

Brooke: Thanks.

Lindsey: And you are so pretty in person.

Brooke: Thanks, so are you.

Lindsey: Okay, this hasn’t happened to me since college.

Brooke: Right.  Okay… Um.

(Lucas walks in and sees the girls.)

Lucas: Wow uh, this hasn’t happened to me since college.

Brooke: Hi, Luke.

Lucas: Brooke Davis.

Brooke: Hi.

Lucas: Oh I missed you.

(They hug.)

Scene 4: The Street.

(Skills and Jamie are walking.)

Skills: So what do you want to do today?

Jamie: I dunno.  Play I guess.

Skills: Yeah, me too.

Jamie: Don’t you have a job?

Skills: What are you?  The man?  I don’t see you payin any rent.

Jamie: That’s because I don’t have any money.

Skills: Well that makes two of us.  Now let’s just go over the drill.  If we see any hot chicks today, who are you?

Jamie: I’m an orphan who needs surgery and you’re paying for it, cuz your rich.

Skills: Good man.

(they do a hand pound)

Jamie: Whoa!

Skills: Soap box derby.  Man, when I was a kid I always wanted to do this.

Jamie: Me too.

Derby Attendant: Here you go.  Fill that out for me.

Skills: It’s a good thing you still a kid.  Cuz we got two days to pimp yo ride.

Jamie: Can uncle Mouth help me pimp my ride?

Skills: I don’t think so.  See uncle Mouth finally got a J O B.

Jamie: That spells job.

Skills: Man you getting way too smart.  It was a lot easier when you was three.

Scene 5: Mouth’s Work.  Television Station.

Mouth: Good evening ladies and gentlemen.  I’m Marvin McFadden and sports is coming up next.

Alice: What exactly are you doing?

Mouth: Oh, uh.  This station called about the field reporter position.

Alice: Field reporter?  That’s a little ambitious don’t you think?

Mouth: But…

Alice: The job that we called you about is an entry level logger position.  We would hire a monkey to do that but the freaks at PETA would more than likely picket.

Mouth: But I guess I assumed…

Alice: First door on the left.  You watch the games, you highlight the best plays, and you leave the log for on air.  If you cannot accomplish that, you are currently wasting my time.

Mouth: Um, I’m sorry but you are still looking for a reporter aren’t you?

Alice: The answer to your question: Yes.  But let us be honest, you don’t really have the face for it, do you?

Scene 6: Haley & Nathan’s House.

(Nathan gets out of his chair, balanced against the dresser but then falls.  He screams and slams his fist on the ground.  He stares at himself in a mirror that fell of the dresser and came to rest next to him.)

Scene 7: THHS Haley’s Classroom.

Haley: Alright, good morning.  This is um, actually my first official day as a teacher and you’re my first official class so… congratulations.

(she stands up and turns to face the blackboard, writing her name.)

Haley: Um.  My name is, Haley James….

Quentin: Mm, mm, mm.  That is some fine ass.

(The class laughs and Haley turns around to face them.)

Haley: Alright, look, first of all, that is no way to talk to a girl, any girl.  And second of all, that is absolutely no way to speak to a teacher.

(Quentin stands up.)

Quentin: I’m sorry.  It was me.  Just trying to give you a compliment.

Haley: What’s your name?

Quentin: Quentin Fields.

Haley: Okay, well sit down Quentin.

Quentin: Yes, Ma’am.  Won’t happen again, Ms. James.

Haley: Actually, it’s Mrs. Scott.

Quentin: Bam that ass!

(Class laughs again.  And Haley turns around.)

Haley: Okay, alright, get out.  You need to go to the office.

(Quentin stands up.)

Quentin: Oh, to the office?  Maybe we could go together.  Huh?

(Class ooohs.)

Quentin: Or maybe you could just spank me right here.

(Another boy stands up and pretends to spank Q.)

Student: Yeah, Mrs. Scott.

Quentin: Yeah, that’s right.  Oooh harder Ms. James Scott.

Haley: Alright, alright.  Settle down.

Q: Spank me, Ms. James Scott.

Haley: I said settle down.

(Class mocks Haley.)

Haley: Class…

(Class mocks Haley again.)

Haley: I have just…

(Class copies Haley.)

(Haley flees the classroom.)

Q: Baby come back.

Scene 8: Outside by the lake.

(Peyton leans on a fence post.)

Brooke: Hey!

Peyton: Hey.

Brooke: How much do you love me?  I went to see Lindsey, Luke’s girlfriend.

Peyton: Oh.

Brooke: I have good news and bad news.

Peyton: Luke and I haven’t been together for three years.  That’s not why I’m home.

Brooke: I totally believe you.  Fine.  I….

(Brooke’s cell phone goes off.)

Brooke: Oooh the office.  They’re just figuring out I’m not in Milan.  I bet Victoria is having a cow.

Peyton: You think that maybe you should call and let her know that you’re just alive?

Brooke: No, now I have a more important question to ask you.  What happened after Lucas finished his book?

Scene 9: Flashback to Peyton walking down the street in LA.

(Her phone rings)

Peyton: Hello?

Lucas: Hey, it’s Lucas.  Um.  I know it’s been a while, but um.  I’m having a book signing in LA in a couple of days…

Peyton: Yeah I know.  I mean I uh, read about it.

Lucas: Yeah, I’ve been pacing the house for the last hour wondering if I should call.  I just… considering how we left things.

Peyton: No it’s okay, it’s actually really good to hear your voice.

Lucas: Yours too.  Well I was hoping um, I’d love to see you if you’re not too busy.

Peyton: Um.  Yeah, Yeah.  Okay.  Sure, I’ll be there.

Lucas: That’s great Peyton.  Well then I, I’ll see you soon then?

Peyton: Yeah, see you soon.

Scene 10: Gym Present day.

Lucas: My name is Lucas Scott, I’m the new head basketball coach of the Tree Hill Ravens.  This is Antwon Taylor, he’s the new assistant head coach.  You want our credentials?  They’re hanging right there.  I must congratulate you.  For some of you, it took only four years to destroy the legacy Coach Durham took 35 years to build.  Nice work.  So as of today, all twelve roster spots are available.  Doesn’t matter if you played last year, in three days we will have our final roster.  If you want to be on it, the I would advise you go hard.  Skills?

Skills: I would definitely go hard.

Lucas: One on two drill.

Skills: Everybody line up at half court.

(team claps and runs to set up.)

(Haley walks in to gym and up to where Jamie is sitting on the bleachers.)

Haley: Hey.

Jamie: Momma, I’m gonna race in a soap opera derby.

Haley: What?

Lucas: Hey.

Haley: Hi.

(They hug.)

Lucas: How was your first day?

Haley: Um.  Horrible.  My first class like attacked me and I ran out in tears and Principle Turner had to finish the rest of my classes.

Lucas: Well I’m sorry, Hales.

Haley: They were awful.  So mean, especially this one kid, who was like sexually harassing me.

Lucas: What?  Who was it?!

Haley: Him.

(She looks at Q as he enters.)

Q: Hello there Mrs. James Scott.

Haley: I’m gonna see you later okay?

(She leaves with Jamie and Lucas blows his whistle.)

Lucas: You’re late.

Q: Yeah?  I’m also you’re leading scorer.

Lucas: No, you might have been the lead scorer on a team that one three conference games all last season.  But you are not my leading scorer.  Not yet.

(Q grabs a ball and slam dunks it.  The team Ooohs.)

Scene 11: Nathan and Haley’s house.

(Nathan hears the commissioner talk again in his head, then the screams of Lucas when he’d fallen through the window.)

(Peyton & Brooke walk up.)

Peyton & Brooke: Well, Well.

Brooke: Awe, don’t look away.  Second and third greatest nights of your life just walked back into your world.

Peyton: Mm, you lookin all rock star.  Totally does it for me.

Brooke: Very heroine chic Nate, I like it.

Nathan: What are you guys doing here?

Brooke: Well, Lucas tells me you can walk, but you need a little incentive.  So we have come up with a drill.

Peyton: For every step you take, we kiss.

Brooke & Peyton: Hey.

Peyton: It’s good to see you.

(They hug Nathan.)

Brooke: We’ve missed you.

(Haley walks out.)

Haley: Nathan.

Peyton: Hey.

Brooke: Hi!

Haley: Uh hi! What are you guys doing here?!

Brooke: We came to see you and…

Haley: Oh, Jamie sweetie, come here.  There’s people I want you to meet.  Come on, it’s okay.  This is Brooke and Peyton, and this is our son Jamie.

Peyton: Hey Jamie, how are ya?

Brooke: He’s beautiful.  Nate!  We’ve missed you.

(Haley, Brooke, Peyton hug.)

Peyton: Wow.

Scene 12: The guys apt.

Lucas: Man I’ve always wanted one of these things.

Skills: Yeah, me too.

Jamie: Me too.

Skills: I think we should paint it red.  You know, the red racer.  Yo kid, talk to me about the cape.  What’s the drill?

Jamie: I’m a super hero.

Skills: Is that right?  Okay, why don’t you fly to the kitchen and get me a beer?

Lucas: So what’s your take on the team’s former leading scorer?

Skills: Quentin?  Kids pretty good.

Lucas: Kids really good.  Now we just gotta figure out if we can get him to play a team game ya know?

Jamie: Can I have pudding?

Skills: You can read right?

(Jamie nods.)

Skills: Okay, if the pudding says, Junk or Fergie, you can have it.

Jamie: Thank you.

Lucas: Hey, and just one, okay?  You know I mean it’s like I don’t know if they lost all of those games because they didn’t have enough guys like him or…

Skills: Or maybe they just lost because of him.

Lucas: You know who he reminds me of…

Skills: Yeah.

Scene 13: Nathan & Haley’s House

(Nathan is trying to stand up, but Jamie and Haley come outside and he sits back down.)

Jamie: Hi daddy, have you seen my basketball?

Nathan: Nah.

(Jamie walks away to look for his ball.)

Haley: You okay?

(Nathan just looks at her and doesn’t say anything.)

Haley: I’m fine wife, how was your day?  Oh you know, husband, my day really sucked, but thanks for asking.

Nathan: And mine didn’t?

Haley: That’s just a little selfish don’t you think?

(Jamie opens the gate and walks out.)

Nathan: No.  No, I don’t think.  And I didn’t see you lose your dream.

Haley: Maybe you need to open up your eyes!

(Car tires screech.)

Haley: Where’s Jamie?  Jamie?  Jamie!

(Carrie walks through the gate with Jamie.)

Carrie: This belong to you?

Scene 14: The guys apartment.

(Knock at the door.)

Brooke: Wine delivery from New York City.

Mouth: Wow, I called for that wine two years ago!  Get in here!  Hi!

Brooke: Hi!

(they hug.)

Mouth: Come on in.

Scene 15: Nathan & Haley’s house.

(Haley is in the kitchen making dinner and talking to Carrie.)

Haley: Can I just ask you why you decided to become a nanny?

Carrie: Honestly, because I get paid to work with some really great kids.  Eventually I’d like to maybe go back to school and study to be a pediatrician.  Someday.  When I have someone else’s life and income.  Look, Haley.  I know when you go to interview’s like this, both sides are trying to figure out how crazy the other person is.

Haley: Haha, are you doing that too?

Carrie: I get it.  But I’ve taken enough of your time.  You have my references and Jamie seems like a wonderful boy so just let me know.  Either way it was great meeting you.

Haley: It was great meeting you too, thank you so much.

(Jamie comes in with mud covering him.)

Jamie: Look Momma!  Me & Daddy made mud!

Haley: I’m sorry, who am I kidding, how soon could you start?

(They laugh.)

Scene 16: Mouths Bedroom.

(Skills climbs in the bed where Brooke & Mouth are sleeping and takes a picture, waking Brooke.)

Skills: Well imagine that.  Brooke Davis.

Brooke: What time is it?

Skills: Like 8:30.

Brooke: Oh no.  I told Haley I’d take Jamie!

(Mouth wakes up and Brooke leaves the room.)

Skills: That was some wild night baby.

Mouth: What time is it?

Skills: Like 8:30.

Mouth: Oh no.  I’m late for work!

(Skills laughs.)

Scene 17: The Guys apartment.

(Brooke comes out looking for her shoes.)

Brooke: Jamie, have you seen my shoes cuz I’m supposed to go and pick up… Jamie!

(She walks over to where Jamie is eating cereal.)

Brooke: What are you doing here?

Jamie: Mommy brought me over, she said not to wake you.

Brooke: Right.  You ever had a wine hangover?

Jamie: I have a floppy eared bunny named Chester.

Brooke: Right.

(Mouth comes out of his room.)

Mouth: I gotta go, I’m late for work, it was great to see you Brooke.  Hi Jamie!

Scene 18: Mouth’s work.

(Mouth comes in and starts working.)

Mouth: Alright.

Alice: Well, well, well.  Looks like somebody just got strike two.

Mouth: Look Alice, I think we got off to the wrong start.  I just want you to know that I’m honored to be a part of your staff, and I’m looking forward to working for you and learning…

Alice: I really don’t like you.

Mouth: Well, um, what can I do to change that?

Alice: Quit, before I fire you.

Scene 19: The guys apartment.

(Brooke & Jamie are talking about his soap box derby car.)

Brooke: Jamie this thing is really awesome.

Jamie: Yeah…

Brooke: Yeah?  What?  Aren’t you excited about your big race?

Jamie: I guess but, it’s supposed to be my car and they’re not letting me do anything.

Brooke: Well then you better stand up for yourself then huh?

Jamie: What do you mean?

Brooke: Well, like what color do you want it to be?

Jamie: Raven blue like daddy.  But they want it red, like Elmo, and I hate Elmo.  Grover’s so much better, and Grover’s blue.

Brooke: I so agree with you.  Blue it is.  You’ve gotta take a stand Jamie.  If you start giving in now, it’s just going to get worse.  Trust me.

Jamie: I’m glad you’re my god mother.

Brooke: Me too buddy.  Now lets go get some paint.  Come here!  I gotcha!

Scene 20: Haley’s classroom.

(Haley walks in and Principle Turner is there.)

Haley: Hi, Principle Turner.

Turner: Haley, uh, I thought I’d join you for a few days.

Haley: I can do this on my own.

Turner: Oh, I know, but you’re young and sometimes the students take advantage of that.  Let’s get you walking and then you can run.

Scene 21: The Gym.

Skills: Run, run, run!  Pick it up!

Lucas: Blue team!  Two on Two zone!  Two on two zone!

Q: We don’t play no zone coach!

Lucas: You do if I say so!

Q: Shoot, if we stay on man to man I can do this.

(Q grabs the ball and dunks it.)

Scene 22: Hospital.

(Peyton wheels Nathan in for Physio.)

Nathan: Just take me home Peyton.  I’m not feelin this today.

Peyton: Maybe not, but the doctors are.

Nathan: Well the doctors weren’t the ones with a piece of glass in their spine and nerve damage for f-in months ago.  Anyway, it’s not like I’ll ever play basketball again.

Peyton: Okay.

(She stops and walks around to face him.)

Peyton: First of all, shut up, and now take a look around.  You have a life that any one of these kids would die for.  And what’s really sad, is that most of them probably will.

(She leaves and Nathan sees a kid who’s climbing on their hospital bed.)

Scene 23: Tric.

(Brooke, Peyton and Haley are at the bar.)

Brooke: So that morning I’m reading an article about how she’s recently sober, and that night, she’s in the booth next to me at a club wasted.

Peyton: And then my label signs her to a record deal.  I’m sorry, I can’t be a part of that.

Brooke: Ladies, here’s to not being a part of it.

Haley: Here’s to taming my demonic English class.

Brooke: No, no, we’re not going there because this song is insane!

(They get up and go out on the dance floor.)

(Brooke sees Mouth.)

Brooke: Mouth!  Hey! Hi!

Mouth: My boss hates me.

Brooke: So shut up and dance.

Haley: Here comes Lindsey.  Hey! Hey!

(she motions for Lindsey to join them.)

Haley: Hey, come here! Hi!  How are you?

(Peyton sneaks away from the group.)

Brooke: Hey you.  Hey Lindsey, I want you to meet my best friend…

(She sees random guy dancing.)

Brooke: Not that guy.  Um, I don’t know where she went.

Scene 24: Out on the street.

(Skills, Nathan & Jamie are walking along.)

Skills: So here’s the plan, I figure we do a couple of test runs, you know, work out the kinks.  Then tomorrow night, big game James here, gonna smoke all them little brats.

Lucas: Yeah boy.

(They walk up to Fergie and Junk.)

Skills: Alright, I give to you, the red racer!

(He yanks off the blanket to reveal a blue car.)

Lucas: The blue bullet?

Jamie: Brooke helped me.

Lucas: Yeah.

Skills: Well it don’t matter.  You ready to try it flash?

(Jamie shakes his head.)

Skills: Figured that much.  So check this out, we gonna use this maniquin for the first run.

(Junk puts the dummy in the car.)

Junk&Skills: Alright.

Skills: Let’s roll.

Lucas: Move away.

(Skills pushes the car off with his feet.  It rolls down the hill for a bit then a wheel falls off and it crashes and the dummies head falls off.)

All: oooh.

(Jamie’s eyes widen.)

Skills: Awe man, we gonna have to fix that.

Scene 25: Tric.

(Peyton walks back in.)

Lindsey: Hi.

(Peyton turns around shocked.)

Peyton: Oh hi.

Lindsey: Lindsey.

Peyton: Peyton.

Lindsey: Uh, I know this is awkward, but I just wanted to say hi, and I know I don’t know you but I feel like I do.  At least the version of you from the book.  You seemed really brave.

Peyton: Thanks.

Lindsey: Anyway.  I hope to see you around Peyton.  Take care.

(Lindsey walks away and Brooke walks up to Peyton.)

Peyton: Damn it, I really didn’t wanna like her.

Brooke: I know but she’s great right?

(Peyton gives her a look.)

Brooke: Sorry…

Scene 26: Tric, at the bar.

Carrie: Haley?

Haley: Oh, Carrie, Hi.

Carrie: Hi.  Oh my gosh, I probably look like a booze hound.  I was just celebrating with some friends.

Haley: oh no, you look fine, you look great.

Mouth: Really great.

Carrie: Thanks.  Listen, I just wanted you to know that I really appreciate you taking a chance on me.  I’m gonna take good care of Jamie, I promise.

Haley: Oh, I know you will, you’re gonna do just fine.

Carrie: Oh, thanks.  Well, I’ll see you soon.

Haley: Okay.  Have a great night.  Bye.

Carrie: Bye.

Mouth: Bye.

(Peyton & Brooke walk over.)

Brooke: And Mouth, who was that?

Haley: Oh, that was um.  Carrie, she’s our new nanny.

Brooke: I’m sorry, have you lost your mind?  She cannot be your new Nanny.

Haley: Why?

Peyton: Well for starters, have you looked at her?  She is way too hot.

Mouth: Okay, you two need to stop.  Why does everything have to be about looks?  You know, maybe she’s a great Nanny.  Or a great field reporter.  Shouldn’t that be the point and not her looks?  Besides, if Haley doesn’t hire her, I won’t be able to see her in a bikini.

Haley: Nice.

Mouth: Damn she was hot.

Brooke: Oh.

Haley: Alright, I have got to go you guys.  I need to check up on Nathan.

Scene 27: Haley & Nathan’s house.

(Nathan is sitting in his wheelchair beside the pool.)

Scene 28: The River Court.

(Brooke and Peyton are looking at the signatures and then walk over to a bench.)

Brooke: Seems like another life.

Peyton: Well yeah, it was for you.  I mean I appreciate you coming back and everything but considering the way your phones been blowing up, you have a very busy very great life to get back too.

Brooke: Okay.  I have a very important friend who needs me, but why’d you come home Peyton?

Peyton: I guess I was looking for that inspiration I felt when we wrote our names here ya know.  I was fearless then Brooke.

Brooke: So what happened to that girl?

Peyton: That girl became assistant to the assistant.

Brooke: So if you want to be the girl that you thought you could be back then, start a label Peyton, do it yourself.  I am serious.  Peyton, I want to invest in your label.  I believe in you.  Okay?

(Brooke looks up and sees Lucas.)

Brooke: Unless that’s not really why you came home.

(She leans back and starts walking away.)

Brooke: I’m gonna return those phone calls real quick.

(Brooke whispers to Lucas.)

Brooke: Ask about the record label.

Lucas: I’m supposed to ask about the label.

Peyton: Yeah, uh, Brooke wants me to start my own label here.

Lucas: Are you gonna do it?

Peyton: I met Lindsey tonight.  She seems wonderful.  How long have you two been together?

(Lucas gets up and looks away for a moment then turns back to Peyton.)

Lucas: Why didn’t you come to the book signing, in LA, two years ago?

(Peyton stares at him for a second.)

Scene 29: LA Book signing.

Lindsey: Wow, this is a great turn out.  Listen Luke, I know that this was your first book as an author but it was also my first book to edit and I had the best year doing it.  So I just wanted to say thank you.  And I’m proud of you.

(She kisses Lucas’ cheek.)

Lindsey: Okay, you ready?

Lucas: Yeah.  I guess everybody’s here that’s coming.  Hi.

Scene 30: River Court.

Peyton: Luke, I knew we weren’t meant to be.

Lucas: I should get home.  See ya.

Scene 31:  Lucas’ house.

(Lindsey is sitting on the couch and Lucas walks in the door.)

Lucas: Hey, I thought you’d be asleep by now.  How was your night?

Lindsey: Good, I met Peyton.  Let me ask you something, do all of your ex girlfriends have to be so damn pretty?

Lucas: Not like all my current girlfriends.

Lindsey: Oh, all better mean one.

(They kiss.)

Lindsey: Do you know if they’re back for long?  Brooke & Peyton.

Lucas: I don’t know um, Brooke wants to help Peyton start her own record label, maybe in Tree Hill.

Lindsey: You think she’ll be good at it?

Lucas: Yeah, she’d be great at it.

Lindsey: Then if she needs help, you should help her.  And I’ll try my best not to be insanely jealous.

(Lucas kisses her forehead and smiles.)

Scene 32: Nate & Haley’s house.

(Nathan is out by the pool.)

Haley: Hey, as soon as Brooke & Peyton get here, we’re gonna take off okay?

Nathan: I’m not going.

Haley: What?!  James is counting on you.

Nathan: I don’t want anybody seeing me like this.

Haley: Has it occurred to you that this isn’t about you?

(Haley walks inside.)

Scene 33: Inside Naley’s house.

Brooke: Haley we’re here!

Haley: Hey.

Peyton: Hi.

Brooke: So, I have a surprise.  You’re gonna like it.  I made Jamie a little something for his race.

Haley: Oh, okay.

(Jamie comes running in wearing a racing uniform.)

Jamie: Look momma!

Haley: Oh, my goodness!  Look at this!  This is a real racing suit!

Brooke: Mhm.  And I even made you a sponsor P. Sawyer.

Peyton: Oh yeah?  Oh?

(She looks at a patch on Jamie’s uniform.)

Peyton: Peyton Sawyer, unemployed.  Thank you… very much.

Brooke: Your welcome.

Jamie: I can’t wait for daddy to see me.

Haley: Oh… baby listen, um… daddy’s just not feeling very well today.  I’m sorry…

Jamie: He’s not coming?

Haley: No, I’m sorry…  But everybody else is gonna be there.

Peyton: Oh yeah, I hear your uncle Lucas is coming, and Skills and Mouth and all the guys.  I’m sure he’s gonna have the biggest crowd there.

Brooke: Absolutely.

Haley: Yeah.  Okay?

(Jamie nods.)

Haley: Okay, come on.  Come on.

Peyton: Lets do it dude.

Brooke: Come on buddy, lets win a race.

(The girls and Jamie leave and you see Nathan inside, having overheard their conversation.)

Scene 34: The Race Site.

(Crowd cheers and you see some racing cars.)

Haley: Hey, here he is.

Skills: Here he is.  Lightning Jamie Scott.

Mouth: Hey, cool outfit man!

Skills: So what’s good man?  You ready to win this thing or what?

(Jamie nods.)

Scene 35: By the lake.

(Brooke is talking on the phone.)

Brooke: Okay, I’m going to need you to go ahead and stop yelling and listen to me.  No, you are yelling.  You are yelling and it’s MY company.  Why are you yelling at me? I… There is a boy here, yes a boy and he’s… No I don’t… just…

(She yells and throws her phone into the lake.)

Brooke: Gosh!

(Peyton laughs and looks at her dumbfounded.)

Brooke: Can I borrow your phone?

(Peyton hands her the phone.)

(Peyton looks up to see Lucas and Lindsey arriving and stares for a moment or two.)

Brooke: Hi Millicent it’s me.  No it’s great, I uh, I’m just gonna need a new phone.  Okay, thanks.

(She hangs up and hands Peyton back the phone.)

Scene 36: Racing site.

Lucas: Hey buddy.  So you’re racing for Clothes over Bros now huh?

(Jamie points to his patch on the suit.)

Jamie: Peyton Sawyer, Unemployed.

(They all laugh)

Race Official: Racers, to your cars.

Haley: Okay, here we go.

Skills: Lets go get em Flash!

Brooke: Alright big guy, here you go.

Haley: Be careful alright?  Uncle Lucas is gonna put you on.

Lucas: Alright, here we go.

(He puts Jamie in the car.)

Lucas: You good?

Race Official: Okay racers, when you’re ready, place both hands on the steering wheel.

Skills: Lets go big Jamie baby!  You can do it.

(Jamie looks down the racing course and remembers the manaquins fate.)

(Jamie raises his hands to stop the race.)

Race Official: Hold up, Hold up.  Car 23, you okay?

Jamie: I don’t want to.

Race Official: Okay, mom.

Haley: Hey baby, what’s goin on?

Jamie: I don’t wanna race Momma.

Haley: Well you don’t have to, but are you sure, I think it’s gonna be really fun.

Jamie: I wanna talk to Brooke.

(Brooke walks over to Jamie.)

Brooke: What’s up handsome?

Jamie: I don’t wanna do it, but I like my racing suit.

Brooke: Well the suits yours, but are you sure you don’t wanna race?

Jamie: It’s my life, I’m taking a stand.  Is that okay?

Brooke: Yes, that’s okay Honey, come here.

(She picks him up out of the car.)

Jamie: Sorry Uncle Skills.

Skills: That’s okay buddy.

(Skills talks to the little girl who was supposed to race Jamie.)

Skills: You hear that?  My man is taking a stand.  Blazin in his own trail.  Follower.

Scene 37: Naley’s House.

(Nathan is on the couch and Haley walks in.)

Haley: Well, he didn’t race.  He was afraid.  You might know something about that.

Nathan: We’re all afraid.

Haley: Yeah, but he’s four and he needed his dad, and his dad wasn’t there.  Nice work, Dan.

(She carries a plate and some bottles to the kitchen and sets them down.  She pauses then throws them across the room towards Nathan.)

Haley: Are you going to say anything?!  Or are you just going to sit there like you have for the last four months?  You gonna get drunk, maybe pout a little, cry?

Nathan: You don’t get it do you?  I used to be somebody, Haley, do you understand that?  Do you understand what that means?  I used to be Nathan Scott, and I was great.  And I should have walked away, okay, I know that, and I didn’t do it.  And now I’m nothing and I have nothing.

(he sighs and turns around.)

Haley: You have nothing?!  You have a beautiful son who is here, I am here.  You have got to figure out who you’re going to be in this Nathan because this version of you does not work for us!  I cannot keep living like this.  Okay?  Do you understand what I’m saying?  One more night like this Nathan, and I promise you, you will have nothing.

Scene 38: Tric.

(Lucas is sitting at a table and Peyton walks up the stairs.)

Peyton: A little early don’t you think?  I usually don’t start my hard drinking til at least noon.

Lucas: Come here, I want to show you something.

(He gets up and walks Peyton over to a door and slides it open to reveal a large cluttered space.)

Lucas: So I talked to my mom, and um, we decided we want you to have it.  Rent free, under one condition, That it becomes office space for your new label.

Peyton: Luke.

Lucas: And I’ve already talked to Brooke, so I don’t think you have anymore excuses.

Peyton: You know that four years ago I would have jumped at this?

Lucas: But what?  Doesn’t seem so cut and dry anymore?  Cuz it’s not.  I wrote a novel and I can’t write a second one.  Mouth’s boss apparently hates him, Nathan missed his dream by a breath.  It’s life.  So you couldn’t change the world from Los Angeles.  Change it here.  I know you can do it, and so do you.  Just think about it.

(Lucas turns and starts heading for the door.)

Peyton: I was there Luke.

(He stops and turns to face her.)

Peyton: At your book signing in LA.

Scene 39: Flashback Book Signing.

(Peyton walks in and sees Lindsey kiss Lucas on the cheek so she leaves.)

Scene 40: Tric

Peyton: I was there Lucas, and I was so proud of you.  But we hadn’t talked in a long time and I saw you with Lindsey and I figured you guys were together, which clearly you are and… I like her… I do.  But do you remember when you first joined the Ravens and you took all my sketches over to Thud without asking and do you remember what you said that night when you entered the gym the first time?

Lucas: Your art matters… it’s what got me here.

Peyton: Yeah.  It’s like you touched my soul and a few days ago, I was ready to quit again, but you saved me with the words you wrote about me in your novel.  So if you’re struggling to write the next one, you should know that your art matters Lucas… It’s what got me here…

Scene 41: Haley’s classroom.

(Haley enters.)

Haley: Good morning.

(She shuts the door and walks up to her desk.)

Haley: Sit down Mr. Fields.

Q: I think we need a little break.  Hmm?  Like for the rest of the hour?

(The class agrees.)

Q: Whatcha say class, huh?  Who’s with me?

(The class agrees.)

(A few kids get up.)

Haley: Any student who walks out that door fails this quarter.  I’m not going to stop you, I’m just going to fail you.  Say goodbye to extracurricular activities, say goodbye to sports, like basketball.

(The kids sit down, Q still stands.)

Haley: Do you understand that the rest of your life is being shaped right now?  It’s up to you.  You can walk out that door, fail this class and just take your chances.  Or you can sit down, listen and learn from somebody that’s been there.  Choice is yours.

(Q Scoffs then leaves)

Haley: The rest of your life is a long time, and whether you know it or not, it’s being shaped right now.

(He takes a few deep breaths, then a few steps in the water.)

(Skills posts the basketball roster.)

(The guys walk up and Q realizes he didn’t make the team.)

Haley (voiceover): but for the most part, you get what you give.

Scene 45: The gym.

(Lucas & Skills are standing in front of the team sitting on the bleachers, Q walks in.)

Q: This some kinda joke?

Lucas: No, I’m afraid you didn’t make the team.

Q: You understand without me, you’re gonna lose every game?

Lucas: Oh, I think you’re wrong, but if you are right, we’re going to lose as a team.

(Q laughs.)

Lucas: Mr. Fields.  I hear you’ve been disrupting your English class.  I wouldn’t recommend you keep that up.

Q: This ain’t over.

Lucas: It’s this isn’t over.

(Q leaves the gym.)

Haley (voiceover): Let me ask you all a question.  What’s worse, not getting everything you wished for…

Lucas: Well congratulations men.  You are the new Tree Hill Ravens.  Let’s go to work.

(The team cheers.)

Scene 46: Karen’s Café.

(Jamie is throwing a ball at the wall and Brooke is talking to a real estate Agent.)

Haley (voiceover): or getting it, and finding out it’s not enough?

Brooke (on phone): I do love my company.  I just wanna run it from here.  I know it wasn’t the plan.  It’s my life.  I’m taking a stand.  Bye.

(She hangs up the phone.)

Brooke: It’s perfect, I’ll take it.

(She shakes the agents hand.)

Brooke: Thank you.  Help me with this.  Come here.

(She and Jamie pull papers off the window revealing Karen’s Café logo.)

Haley (voiceover): The choices you make.

Nathan: Jamie, wake up.  Hey, we’re going out okay, get ready.

Jamie: Where?

Nathan: It’s a surprise, and hey buddy, bring your cape.

(He rolls away and Jamie grabs his cape from the head of his bed.)

Haley (voiceover): and the person you decide to be.

Scene 49: Lucas’ House.

(Lucas stares at his book signing poster and Lindsey leans up behind him and wraps her arms around him.)

Lindsey: You remember why I gave you that?  We went to dinner after the signing.  It was our first date.  You coming to bed?

Lucas: Actually, um.  I think I’m going to write for a while.

(Lindsey smiles.)

Lindsey: That’s great Luke.

Scene 50: The Racing Site.

(Nathan is in his wheelchair on the hill beside Jamie in the soapbox car.)

Nathan: You know son, there’s gonna be a lot of times in your life when you’re going to be afraid.  Being afraid is okay, but work through that fear or you might miss out on some pretty great things.

Jamie: Are you afraid Daddy?

Nathan: Sometimes.  You?

Jamie: Sometimes.

Nathan: Well, we’ll do this together.  On the count of three.  One, Two, three.

Haley (voiceover): The rest of your life is a long time, and the rest of your life, starts right now.

(Nathan & Jamie race down the hill cheering.)
